Two Teens Accused Of Shooting BB Gun At Knightdale Residents

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -- Police arrested two teens Tuesday evening for shooting a BB gun at Knightdale residents.

Kyler Stewart, 16, and Sean Prestley, 16, each were charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon, the Knightdale Police Department said.

According to police, the two teens would ride through the Planters Walk Subdivision and shoot BB guns at residents.

On Tuesday, the suspects reportedly hit a woman in the leg; it was the fourth incident reported to the police department in three days.

"I heard a noise like an air pistol or something and then I felt a sting on my legs," said Katrina Newton, one of the victims.

Authorities say that the BB guns the teens were carrying looked almost identical to the weapons officers carry.

After she was hit, Newton said she jumped in her car and raced down the street to an officer. Police quickly arrested the teens without any problems.

"In an encounter with a law enforcement officer with the guns they had, it would be a very serious circumstance," said Skip Blaylock, Knightdale Director of Public Safety.

Blaylock said the BB guns Stewart and Prestley were allegedly carrying looked almost identical to the weapons officers carry.

"It's not a game," Newton said. "Someone can seriously get hurt."

Both Stewart and Prestley were released Wednesday to their parents' custody. Stewart's parents told WRAL that while they do not condone the boys' behavior, they do not understand why they are facing such serious charges and being charged as adults, considering it was just a BB gun.

"JUST" a BB gun, huh? Some "parents" need a mandatory course in parenting, responsibility, and gun safety, amongst other things.

I know what you mean, Bill.

My folks and I have some friends from where we used to live in NC...one of their sons several years ago had a BB gun and was pointing it at his brother...
pulled the trigger and as a result the brother went blind in an eye.

Some of those air rifles they sell have a pellet velocity of 1000 fps which can be dangerous even at .177 cal. Where they really BB guns or air pistols.

Good point; a standard .38 Special 158-grain "ball" round travels at 910 fps! Some of the CO2-powered air guns can reach 1300 fps, and are used as "trainers" for Olympic triathletes (running, skiing, rifle shooting). Not "toys" at all.

BB guns can and have killed people. Thus the deadly weapon charges. Kids in their mid-teens know the law and should be charged as adults. The law should be changed to include 13 year olds as adults. My sons knew at 13 that you could not shoot someone.......MGC
