How silly. Even ultra-conservative media have acknowledged that that picture shows the area near the offices of the UN and Hezbollah - two seperate offices that are a few hundred yards apart. Ever heard of keeping your friends close but your enemies closer?

It sounds like a good idea to me. Why do you think cities put police substations in the crappiest neighborhoods?

some interesting developments this morning. it now is evident kofi was informed of the israeli bombing of a un headquarters while in a meeting with condi, and without wasting any time to get any facts, he ran to a camera and microphone and said it was a deliberate attack. i think its clear whose side kofi is on. it also came out today that one of the canadian peacekeepers who was killed had e-mailed his commander in canada a few minutes before the attack that hezbollah was TEN FEET from him and the israeli bombs were getting closer due to that. also reported today, and something kofi failed to acknowlege, is that hezbllah gets as close to the observers as possible, trying to use them as human shields while they launch attacks on israel

NORTHERN ISRAEL (CNN) -- As the bloody fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon entered its 16th day Thursday, a top al Qaeda leader pledged that the terror group would not "stay silent" on the conflict.

The statement was on a tape made by Ayman al Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's deputy, on the Al Jazeera television network Thursday.

"The al Qaeda organization will not stay silent regarding what the Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon are facing," Zawahiri said.

The statement came just a day after international efforts to negotiate a cease-fire in Lebanon stalled at a conference in Rome.

An Israeli general said Wednesday that he expects the combat to continue "for a few more weeks."

The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday suffered its largest loss of life yet in its offensive against Hezbollah guerrillas: Nine Israeli soldiers killed while fighting in southern Lebanese towns.

Eight soldiers died and 22 more were wounded in Bint Jbeil, near the Israeli border, while battling militiamen in what the IDF has called Hezbollah's "terror capital."

There were heavy casualties among Hezbollah fighters, according to Israeli soldiers. The Islamic militia has not released casualty figures since fighting began.

On Tuesday the IDF said it had taken control of the city. On Wednesday it said more troops were being sent there. (Watch how battlefield "control" is fleeting -- 2:29)

In nearby Maroun al-Ras, an Israeli army officer was killed and five soldiers were wounded in fighting, according to the IDF.

Israeli Maj. Gen. Udi Adam told reporters that he assumes the fighting "will go on for a few more weeks."

"And in a few more weeks, I believe we will be able to put an end to this operation -- a successful end," Adam said.

Ten-story building destroyed
On the Mediterranean coast, 10 people were injured Wednesday in the Lebanese port city of Tyre when Israeli airstrikes destroyed a 10-story building, city officials said.

Smoke rose over the city after two large explosions, and people near the building were covered in dust and blood as they fled through the rubble.

The blast came just hours after a ship with hundreds of foreigners aboard departed the seaport in Tyre. Residents in Tyre said they were concerned that Israeli airstrikes would intensify after the Westerners left. (Watch how Tyre had dodged past attacks -- 1:25)

The ship, chartered by Canada, was bound for Cyprus filled with Americans, Australians, Britons, Canadians and other nationalities.

The IDF's Adam said the building was targeted because "there are launchers [there] that fire missiles at Haifa."

Haifa, the third-largest city in Israel, has been the target of numerous air attacks since the conflict escalated July 12 after Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Iranians volunteer to fight Israel
Group heads for 'holy war' in Lebanon

Thursday, July 27, 2006; Posted: 4:19 a.m. EDT (08:19 GMT)

Volunteers pray outside a Tehran cemetery on Wednesday before heading to Lebanon.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Surrounded by yellow Hezbollah flags, more than 60 Iranian volunteers set off Wednesday to join what they called a holy war against Israeli forces in Lebanon.

The group -- ranging from teenagers to grandfathers -- plans to join about 200 other volunteers on the way to the Turkish border, which they hope to cross Thursday. They plan to reach Lebanon via Syria on the weekend.

Organizers said the volunteers are carrying no weapons, and it was not clear whether Turkey would allow them to pass.

A Turkish Foreign Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, would not say Wednesday if Turkey would allow them to cross. Iranians, however, can enter Turkey without a visa and stay for three months.

Iran says it will not send regular forces to aid Hezbollah, but apparently it will not attempt to stop volunteer guerrillas. Iran and Syria are Hezbollah's main sponsors.

"We are just the first wave of Islamic warriors from Iran," said Amir Jalilinejad, chairman of the Student Justice Movement, a nongovernment group that helped recruit the fighters. "More will come from here and other Muslim nations around the world. Hezbollah needs our help."

Military service is mandatory in Iran, and nearly every man has at least some basic training. Some hard-liners have more extensive drills as members of the Basiji corps, a paramilitary network linked to the powerful Revolutionary Guard.

Other volunteers, such as 72-year-old Hasan Honavi, have combat experience from the 1980-88 war with Iraq.

"God made this decision for me," said Honavi, a grandfather and one of the oldest volunteers. "I still have fight left in me for a holy war."

The group, chanting and marching in military-style formation, assembled Wednesday in a part of Tehran's main cemetery that is reserved for war dead and other "martyrs."

They prayed on Persian carpets and linked hands, with their shoes and bags piled alongside. Few had any battle-type gear and some arrived in dress shoes or plastic sandals.

Some bowed before a memorial to Hezbollah-linked suicide bombers who carried out the 1983 blast at Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 U.S. servicemen. An almost simultaneous bombing killed 56 French peacekeepers.

Speakers praised Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah and laid scorn on Muslim leaders -- including their own government -- for not sending battlefield assistance to Hezbollah since the battles erupted two weeks ago.

Even if the volunteers fail to reach Lebanon, their mobilization is an example of how Iranians are rallying to Hezbollah through organizations outside official circles.

Iran insists it is not directly involved in the conflict on the military side, but it remains the group's key pipeline for money. Iran has dismissed Israel's claims that Hezbollah has been supplied with upgraded Iranian missiles that have reached Haifa and other points across northern Israel.

"We cannot stand by and watch out Hezbollah brothers fight alone," said Komeil Baradaran, a 21-year-old Basiji member. "If we are to die in Lebanon, then we will go to heaven. It is our duty as Muslims to fight."

Whats really silly is to think that Hezbollah don't know that they are safer by using UN peace keepers human shields...Sounds like the truth is coming out this morning anyway...

Looks like to me that the Hezbollah army is going to grow. With outside countries volunteering to come in and help them fight, they may start a bigger battle.

Al Qaeda: War with Israel is 'jihad'

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader issued a worldwide call Thursday for Muslims to rise up in a holy war against Israel and join the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza until Islam reigns from "Spain to Iraq."

In a taped message broadcast by Al-Jazeera television, Ayman al-Zawahiri said the terrorist organization would not stand idly by while "these (Israeli) shells burn our brothers.

"All the world is a battlefield open in front of us," said the Egyptian-born al-Zawahiri, second-in-command to Osama bin Laden.

"The war with Israel does not depend on cease-fires ... . It is a Jihad for the sake of God and will last until (our) religion prevails ... from Spain to Iraq," al-Zawahiri said. "We will attack everywhere." Spain was controlled by Arab Muslims until they were driven from the country at the turn of the 16th century.

Al-Zawahiri declared that Arab regimes were complicit in Israeli fighting against Hezbollah and the Palestinians.

"My fellow Muslims, it is obvious that Arab and Islamic governments are not only impotent but also complicit...and you are alone on the battlefield. Rely on God and fight your enemies...make yourselves martyrs."

Al-Zawahiri wore a gray robe and white turban. A picture of the burning World Trade Center was on the wall behind him along with photos of two other militants. One appeared to be a bearded Mohammed Atta, the Egyptian ringleader of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The other was Mohammed Atef, also known as Abu Hafs al-Masri, a former top lieutenant of bin Laden who was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan in November 2001.

Al Qaeda broadcasts are thought to contain coded messages to members. Three of images on the screen -- that of al-Zawahiri and the pictures of al-Masri and what was believed to be Atta -- were Egyptian.

The Arab satellite broadcaster did not transmit the entire tape, using instead selected quotes interspersed with commentary from an anchor.

"The shells and rockets ripping apart Muslim bodies in Gaza and Lebanon are not only Israeli (weapons), but are supplied by all the countries of the crusader coalition. Therefore, every participant in the crime will pay the price," al-Zawahiri said.

The message was al-Zawahiri's tenth this year. Bin Laden has issued five messages in a particularly active year of messages from the top al Qaeda leadership.

"We cannot just watch these shells as they burn our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon and stand by idly, humiliated," al-Zawahiri said.

Al-Zawahiri last appeared in a video posted on an Islamic Web site on the one-year anniversary of the train bombings in London. In the July 7 tape, he said two of the four suicide bombers in London spent time in an al Qaeda training camp, preparing themselves for a suicide mission.

Top al Qaeda leaders paid tribute in June to the slain leader of their Iraq network, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in separate video recordings. Many of their messages this year have dealt with current events in Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.

Bin Laden message expected
Another new audio or video message from bin Laden was also expected in the coming days and was planned to deal with Gaza and Lebanon, according to IntelCenter. The U.S.-based independent group provides counterterrorism information to the U.S. government and media.

Al Qaeda's media production wing, Al-Sahab, announced the al-Zawahiri tape would be ready soon in a message Thursday on and Islamic Web site.

Al-Zawahiri said Muslims everywhere must rise up to attack "crusaders and Zionists ... and support jihad (holy war) everywhere...until American troops are chased from Afghanistan and Iraq, paralyzed and impotent...having paid the price for aggression against Muslims and support for Israel."

Israel began an offensive on Gaza days after Palestinian militants captured an Israeli soldier on June 25. It opened a second front in Lebanon after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers on July 12.

Since fighting began between Israel and Hezbollah, at least 424 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to figures compiled from the Health Ministry, military and Hezbollah. Fifty-one Israelis have been killed, including 33 members of the military, according to Israeli authorities.

Hezbollah was using UN post as 'shield'
Canadian wrote of militia's presence, 'necessity' of bombing

Joel Kom, with files from Steven Edwards, CanWest News Service, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Thursday, July 27, 2006
The words of a Canadian United Nations observer written just days before he was killed in an Israeli bombing of a UN post in Lebanon are evidence Hezbollah was using the post as a "shield" to fire rockets into Israel, says a former UN commander in Bosnia.

Those words, written in an e-mail dated just nine days ago, offer a possible explanation as to why the post -- which according to UN officials was clearly marked and known to Israeli forces -- was hit by Israel on Tuesday night, said retired Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie yesterday.

And still more......

UN backs off claim no Hezbollah activity near peacekeepers' base
Steven Edwards, CanWest News Service
Published: Thursday, July 27, 2006
UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations appeared to be caught in a contradiction Wednesday after the world body claimed there had been no Hezbollah activity in the vicinity of a peacekeeping base destroyed in an Israeli strike, killing four UN military observers, one of them Canadian.

An e-mail written by Maj. Paeta Hess-von Kruedener, identified Wednesday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper as the dead Canadian, reveals Hezbollah was extremely active in the days and weeks before.

Kofi wasn't "choosing sides" in saying what he said, nor does it appear that he was jumping to conclusions, or at least not more so than could be reasonably expected:

UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon contacted Israeli troops 10 times before an Israeli bomb killed four of them, an initial UN report says. The post was hit by a precision-guided missile after six hours of shelling, diplomats familiar with the probe say.

....The UN report says each time the UN contacted Israeli forces, they were assured the firing would stop.

A senior Irish soldier working for the UN forces had warned the Israelis six times that their bombardment was endangering the lives of UN staff, Ireland's foreign ministry said.

Had Israel responded to the requests, "rather than deliberately ignoring them", the observers would still be alive, a diplomat familiar with the report said.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5217176.stm

Assuming Kofi knew this detail, I don't see how one could blame him for assuming that the strike was intentional. Its kinda hard to say you didn't know about a site while you were on the phone with people at that site...

And even if we assume that there was Hizbollah activity near the UN site .... if the IDF was in contact with these UN observers throughout this bombing raid, why didn't the IDF just tell them that their safety couldn't be guaranteed where they were and that they must evacuate???

hmmmm, good point. But as facts regarding this still seem to be coming out, how do we know that the IDF didn't warn the UN observers?

The no-brainer is why are the UN observers hanging around in the middle of a war zone...
