TV Guide interview with Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet).
Elizabeth Mitchell: Has Lost's Juliet Found Her Romeo in Jack?
by Matt Webb Mitovich
This past Friday the 13th was a lucky, yet unlucky, day TVGuide.com. The good news is that we got the chance to Q&A Lost newcomer Elizabeth Mitchell, who first caught our eye years ago when she bedded Angelina Jolie (in the HBO movie Gia). The bad news was that we had to sit on this feature until today, Nov. 1 — albeit in time for Lost's penultimate pre-hiatus outing. (The even worse news was that the end of our chat — in which we discussed The Santa Clause 3, opening Friday and in which she again plays the big guy's Mrs. — was "lost" to a tape-recorder snafu. Yeah, the Others, I'm casting a wary eye at you.) But still, there was plenty to share about Juliet's agendas, both enigmatic and romantic.
TVGuide.com: The big tease in talking to you is that I can't run this Q&A until Nov. 1.
Elizabeth Mitchell: [Laughs] That is a tease!
TVGuide.com: Anyway, welcome to the zany world of Lost....
Mitchell: Oh, thank you. Yeah, it is zany. Crazy, even.
TVGuide.com: When did you first audition for Juliet, and how many actresses did you need to beat up to get the role?
Mitchell: Well, yeah, I "took out" a couple. I'm not really sure [how many were up for the role], but I saw a lot of women at the first audition. I basically went in for one [reading], the next day went in for another, and the next day went in for the last — and that was that.
TVGuide.com: Was this the first crack you took at the show? They brought on another blonde last season....
Mitchell: Libby, right? No, I was not up for that. I haven’t ever auditioned for Lost before.
TVGuide.com: How has Hawaii been for you? Are you minding the gas pedal, drinking Shirley Temples...?
Mitchell: Oh, yeah. I have a baby, so I do stick to Shirley Temples. And the gas pedal, of course I always drive the speed limit, every second of the day. It's tricky here you know. [The speed limits] go from like 55 [mph] to 25, and they warn you only a little bit. And I just passed, like, three cop cars that were Mercedes, so it's not like you could outrun them. Not that I would try. [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: Perhaps more importantly, how is your aforementioned year-old son liking Hawaii?
Mitchell: He loves the beach, wades out in the water.... He's a happy guy. Hawaii is particularly suited for children.
TVGuide.com: Has ABC pulled the ol' rookie/newcomer prank on you and warned you "not to reveal anything" to me? Because that's all a bunch of hogwash, you know.
Mitchell: Oh, I'm so happy you told me that! Good. In that case, we have a lot to talk about. [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: I sense that Juliet is a somewhat disenfranchised Other. Am I on the right track?
Mitchell: I don’t know.... It does appear to be that way, from the first few episodes, absolutely. But we'll see.
TVGuide.com: And based on that Oct. 11 "you never made me soup" scene, are we to infer that perhaps she and Ben have a failed romantic past?
Mitchell: I don’t know what kind of past they have, but it definitely is complicated and intricate. It was in-depth, whatever it was.
TVGuide.com: When they blind you as an actress with such secrecy....
Mitchell: [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: "She laughs at the poor reporter...." As I was saying, what kind of direction do they give you in playing this character?
Mitchell: Well, they tell me what I need to know. For instance, there was a scene where I needed to know a little bit more to play it correctly, so I called and said, "I need to know such and such," so they told me such and such. It's on a need-to-know basis.
TVGuide.com: So, they might say to you, "Even though Juliet is doing this, she doesn’t really want to be doing this."
Mitchell: Absolutely, yes. Or, they will say, "She's extraordinarily good at doing this, even if she doesn’t want to do this."
TVGuide.com: I had to laugh at this season's opening scene. It was as if they transplanted Wisteria Lane onto the island.
Mitchell: I think that was their intention, actually!
TVGuide.com: I was half expecting Edie to show up in a halter top.
Mitchell: Right, and bring over, like, a cherry pie? People would pay to see that, for sure.
TVGuide.com: Does Juliet figure into the Nov. 1 episode airing the night this Q&A goes live?
Mitchell: She kind of figures into most of the episodes, except for [Oct. 18]. There are snippets of her here and there, and you get a little bit more of the story every time. I think they're kind of excited about this particular story line, but there's stuff going on with everyone else that everyone is fascinated by, too.
TVGuide.com: What can you tease about the pre-hiatus cliff-hanger, airing Nov. 8?
Mitchell: Hmm, what can I tell you....
TVGuide.com: No, what can you tease? I know better than to expect Lost actors to tell me anything.
Mitchell: There is a little bit revealed here about one of your favorite characters. That much I can say!
TVGuide.com: Is it safe to say that Juliet's book club is indefinitely postponed?
Mitchell: [Laughs] Yeah, I think so, very possibly. But you never know! Hey, no one liked my book, and that’s fine.
TVGuide.com: Get a load of this clumsy segue from the book-club talk: "Do you think Juliet is starting a new chapter here, with Jack in her life?"
Mitchell: Wow... that was deep. You're smooth. Very possibly, she is. I think she is more drawn to Jack than she thought she would be, I can definitely say that. I don’t think she walked into the room [in the season premiere] thinking she would be drawn to Jack. I think she just went in there to do a job, but... he's fairly enticing!

Not sure why they killed Eko...maybe he had served his purpose on the show by now....
----- MINOR SPOILER (for a Feb. episode) ------------------------
Get this though - I was reading an interview with the actress that plays Juliet in Entertainment Weekly, and it's mentioned that she shoots someone in an episode that airs in Feb....the reporter states that they "are filming a whopper of a scene for a February episode..." and later says..."Cameras rolling, she expertly wields a Sig Sauer and pumps two bullets into someone shocking; the still-standing are left gasping as she coldly lowers the gun." From the Nov. 3 EW....

Great episode last night. Man I did not want Ecko gone yet though, that was way unexpected for me. I thought that if you weren't afraind of the black cloud it would retreat. Guess he should have confessed.
Yeah I am a bit LOST on Juliet, one minute I think shes okay, and they next I am not so sure. Wonder what Jack will do..........thats a stressful decision.
I am starting to wonder if the others are connected to all the freaky things that happen thoughout the island (black smoke, polar bear,Darma) or if they are two seperate entities.

Why do they have to kill anyone off? I was just starting to like Eko. But I'm glad it's not anyone on my must-live list. If it had been, I would have been upset if they got bumped off!
The jury's still out on Juliet for me. Ben vs Juliet - which one is more evil? Or can we trust that she means what she says - on camera? Now come on, Ben is going to catch on that she wrote those words? She'd better burn them. So when she said some want a change, does that include Danielle's daughter Alex and the young boy she was trying to find, that was held in a cage? Of course he could have been a plant and Alex could have been told to say what she did to Kate.
All I know is this - if I were Jack, romance would be the last thing on my mind, survival and getting rescued (fat chance) would be of utmost importance. I can't see him operating on Ben and then allowing something to go wrong in the surgery. Jack has his demons but murder isn't one of them. That we know of. His medical oath will come into play here and Ben will survive, mark my words. As my daughter likes to say - Ben is like Darth Vader - very, very important to the story. You don't kill off Lord Vader! Well, not until the very last moment of Lost.....LOL
And finally, didn't anyone question if that was going to be a real cheeseburger? So now we know they have regular food drops, similar to the one our Losties found. Frozen beef patties on dry ice. But produce? I guess they have a greenhouse on this "other" island. Hey, I like that - that's what I'm calling this island - that other island. Fits ya know....

Read the third last paragraph, once again Angel Cohn seems to know just what fans are thinking. I loved her take on there had to be a better way to ask a spinal surgeon to operate on you. How about a polite request, I wanted to shout out last night!!!

An ABC insider on another board said that the actor was very hard to work with and didn't get along with the other castmembers, so they really had no choice.
FWIW... Criminal Minds flat out beat Lost last night in total viewers(it hasn't done that yet, just has beat it in Fast Nationals and other preliminary data,. 16.74 million for CBS, 16.12 million for ABC).

Juliet seems like a spy for the other others, the bad ones
Also, I am thinking Danielle leads the bad others and controls the smoke monster. Afterall, she seemed unconcerned when she heard it and merely called it a security system. Right after what may have been the flame discovred in the pearl, smokie went on the attack (of course, Eko got what he deserved, the happenings in the church were justified, but not the stealing of the food from the convent)

Eko’s Demise No Big Secret To Some
Fans of the show “Lost” were taken aback this week when one of the show’s favorite characters was smoked (literally), however executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof told TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello that this week’s death of Mr. Eko, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, was planned all along.
This past Wednesday, Mr. Eko met his demise in the clutches of the mysterious smoke monster and was pounded quite merciously by the strange apparition.
Cuse told Ausiello that Mr. Eko was never long for this world. “When Adewale came on the show, he didn’t want to make a long-term commitment to a series,” Cuse said. “We love him, and so we agreed that he would come on the show, and then we would find a time in which his arc would come to an end. And we sort of felt after a lot of conversations with him—most of which took place at the end of the spring last year—that we would finish his character somewhere in [these first] six episodes. And as we started talking about what was going to really help the drama of these six episodes, we thought, ‘Well, this is the perfect place to do it.’ As we said, we all kind of went into this [with the idea] that it was only going to be for a limited period of time.”
Rumors that Akinnuoye-Agbaje had problems with some of the cast and crew have been around since season one of the series, but on that count Lindelof would only say, “We don’t really talk about anything other than the creative decisions made on the show. If you’re hearing it from other people, you’re not hearing that from us.”
On Thursday’s Regis and Kelly daytime talk show Akinnuoye-Agbaje also put to rest any talk about problems on the set explaining that his committment to the show was always to be short-term, and that for the next two years he will be needing all his time because he will be directing his first major motion picture. He did not elaborate on what the film will be about during the interview.
Lost will feature its last episode on November 8th at 9PM ET/PT before going on a 13-week vacation to allow the showing of Taye Diggs’ new SF thriller “Day Break” in the Wednesday night time slot. Lost will return for 16 full episodes to complete Season 3 in February 2007.

Somewhere on the TV Guide website I read a reviewer's take on not putting ER on hiatus. How that was a smart idea on NBC's part. Meanwhile, over at ABC he hoped taking Lost off for months wouldn't turn out to be a bad idea. He said if it turns out to be, fans will be screaming for Lost to return.
Which got me to thinking.
If NBC was big enough to admit they were wrong and decide to keep ER on all year long, it may be possible for ABC to ~consider~ airing Lost before Feb. 7th.
If we're really disgusted by this decision (I am, if you couldn't tell), we can do something about it! We can write the network.
Whadda all say? Good idea, bad idea, total waste of time? Interested in all opinions.

If their new show bombs, then it's possible, but if they start it before February 7th, there will be repeats. Let's say they return it in Early January right after the holidays end, that's 4-5 repeats that would air. They are really behind this new show(I'm sure you've seen the promos), so they are going to give it a solid chance. It will be against mostly repeats in December, which is a plus for it.

I was starting to like Eko too. And yes he did stare that monster down. Let me just say this too - I literally crack up everytime I see that black monster/smoke. JJ Abrams needed to consult George Lucas here or somebody, maybe even Stephen King possibly - the smoke looks so incredibly fake! Other things are creepy but that smoke - a total joke! Okay, my little rant is over now.
Ever notice when a cast member is about to die we get a lengthy backstory on the character? They did this with Shannon but didn't we already have a good idea she was going to die? I had hope Eko would live and it might be Paulo or Nikki. They're newbies anyway - put 'em on the payroll for one week. LOL

Lost's Let-Go Eko Seeks to Snuff Rumors
Lost's Mr. Eko may be dead, but rumors live on that his portrayer, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, was diffficult to work with, a trait which may have sealed his holy man's fate. [See the Ausiello Report for details.] "I've heard speculation that I left Lost because I wasn't happy. Straight up, it was probably one of the best relationships I've ever had, in terms of developing a character," the actor tells the New York Post. Akinnuoye-Agbaje, a Buddhist, says that his acting methods — staying in character and not talking to anyone while on the set, instead passing downtime by reading scriptures — could have been misread. "That's just the way I work," he explains.
