Losing weight...on national TV!

#181 Postby Turtle742 » Sun Mar 28, 2004 6:36 pm

Hello everyone!

I just found this thread after posting the following information on the "Off Topic" thread earlier this afternoon. I was mainly talking about being on television, but one BIG part of it is below....

However, there's another long term project I've been working on since January of 2003 that has truly kept me totally engrossed (literally) on another website as a mentor, and having absolutely NOTHING to do with my job. Let me explain...

Last year was my 25th high school reunion from Quincy High School, south of Boston. Well, while my classmates were planning the reunion, we were contacted by Dateline NBC to take part in an unusual project, what they call the "Dateline NBC Ultimate Diet Challenge." Six members of the Class of 1978 (yep, the BLIZZARD year was when I graduated HS) would follow 6 different diets, and have their progress monitored by Dateline camera crews leading up to the reunion last Columbus Day weekend.

Well, long story short...I was one of the 6 "participants" on the "Ultimate Diet Challenge," which included the class jock and homecoming queen, and have been on national TV 4 times since last April, including a follow up segment called "Keeping It Off" two weeks ago. If you have seen the shows, I was known as the "math whiz," because I was the president of the Math Team during my senior year of HS.

(NOTE: I'm working with a weight loss "coach," Jorge Cruise and his "8 Minutes in the Morning" program.)

If you have Windows Media Player or Real Player on your computer, you can see the March 14th segment on your computer! Go to the following link:

http://www.vmsdigital.com/MyFiles.aspx? ... 931837412D

and you can view it. It's about a 10 minute segment. Also, if you don't have the viewers on your computer, here are the links on the Dateline NBC website for the transcripts of both the March 14th show, as well as the hour long "finale" from January 4th, which included coverage of the reunion.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4488471/ for March 14th's show

http://msnbc.msn.com/ID/3841501/ for the January 4th show

NOTE: The link for the video does "die" soon (not sure when though). So, if this post stays on for a while, the link may not work. Just to let you know.

Believe me when I say that this past 14 months have been a truly SURREAL, amazing experience, and one I wouldn't trade for the world. And that's a big reason why I haven't been here on this website as much as I'd like. But got really intrigued when the DH and I were talking about the Brazilian hurricane, and just knew I'd see great info here on Storm2K!

I hope I'm not being to presumptious by sharing my story with all of you here. I'll try to stop by here every now and then, but I'm really busy over on my weight loss coach's website helping out as a mentor there. I'm even a "buddy" to a good weather friend from Long Island that's started the weight loss program I'm doing, and he's lost over 25 pounds in less than 2 months!

Enjoy!

Pretty easy.

Any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Take care!

Hi Jennifer!

Weeeellll....it was INTERESTING, let's say. At least we weren't being followed constantly, but trying to get set up for the shoots took a LOT of coordination between the camera crews and my other classmates. The crews tried to film at least two of us at once. Most of us live in eastern Massachusetts (except one), but it was a matter of work schedules. You may (or may not) know that I work rotating shifts, while one of my classmates (Rick, the Atkins guy) works straight midnight shifts at the Post Office. So, trying to get us coordinated to film was very challenging at times.

The producers did make sure that we all knew about the picnic at Gio's house last June for the 6 of us (with all of our spouses...yes, my DH went with me, though they did not use any of his footage), and I made sure that I was off from work that day!

And the scheduling woes continue!! They are trying to set up to catch more footage of me in the next couple of weeks for the summer update (probably sometime in June, but not sure).

Actually, about the on camera weigh ins, Jennifer...that was a sticky point for me when I was being considered for the project. Finally, though, one of my colleagues at work said to me....It's just a NUMBER, and that number will go DOWN when you do this! She was RIGHT! Now, I'm so past that.

After they filmed me in January, I went through a 5 week plateau. I am losing again, but very slowly (1/2 to 1 pound a week). But...can't complain. I'm down 75 pounds since starting this adventure in late January '03. 50 more to go...

Thanks for the question, Jennifer! Take care!

Congrats Turtle! That's about how much I have lost, give or take a few.

I just weighed in. I gained a few (went back up to 240 or so) but am now back down to 235 lbs. :)

Wow Turtle! That is an awesome feat. Congrats!

I've lost another 5 lbs in the past two weeks, so I am psyched! I've been doing this yoga & pilates workout and it is really refreshing.

How is everyone else doing? It appears we've been slacking, lol. Not many posts going on here.

Today I can celebrate big time. I started the South Beach Diet back in March and my goal was to lose either 50 pounds or get back into a size 12 by July 4th. I'm ashamed to admit that I let myself go and found myself weighing in at 200 pounds and wearing a size 18-20.

This morning I am wearing a size 12 pair of jeans to work and I was able to button/zip them without laying across the bed and/or struggling to get them fastened.

I can't claim that I lost the 50 pounds because I was only able to take half the numerical weight off but I started Curves for Women two months ago and it made a world of difference.
