I wouldn't be shocked if it was a test. After all, China did test their anti-satellite missile a few months ago.

Ooh, hydrazine. Hydrazine is nasty, nasty stuff - it's a very highly toxic and corrosive carcinogen.

The ministry said there was insufficient proof that Washington's decision to fire a missile at the disabled satellite was to prevent a potentially deadly leak of toxic gas as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere.

"In our opinion, the decision to destroy the U.S. satellite is not as harmless as it is being presented. Especially as the United States has been avoiding talks on restricting a space arms race for quite a long time," the ministry's information department said in a statement.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is concerned by U.S. plans to shoot down an ailing spy satellite and is considering what "preventative measures" to take, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

"The Chinese government is paying close attention to how the situation develops and demands the U.S. side fulfill its international obligations and avoids causing damage to security in outer space and of other countries," spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

"Relevant departments in China are closely watching the situation and studying preventive measures," Liu said in a brief statement posted on the Foreign Ministry's Web site (http://www.fmprc.gov.cn).

Well that would means the US ships would be in the South Pacific somewhere within a 1000 Miles. If the US misses the Chinese will get a chance prior to 14:00 EST...
round midnight in china.

The U.S. government issued a formal notice warning ships and planes to stay clear of a large area of the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii.

The notice says the two- and-a-half hour window begins 2:30 a.m. Thursday Greenwich Mean Time, which is 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on the East Coast, and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hawaii.

The timing is also after the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to be safely on the ground

First Attempt to Shoot Down Satellite is Wednesday Night

All is expectation about what the first attempt (Wednesday Night) to shoot down the satellite will turn out.

I know it's not entirely sensible, but if you want a laugh you should read the GLP thread(s) on this, some of the theories are frankly madness. Thread link (probably contains strong language, I'm not going through 8 pages to find out)

Some of the more, "off the wall" quotes from the thread (censored as needed):

Quote from Anonymous 150446:

This "satellite" is obviously FAR more dangerous than they are letting on. Our diplomats around the world have supposedly been WARNING all the other countries.

What we do know for sure is that the government will never tell us the real truth, nor the whole truth.

reference: UFO's

Quote from DJ 369831:
What if there's not even a Satellite (or one that's a threat anyways)... This would be the perfect excuse for the U.S. to launch an ICBM without immediate retaliation. "Whoops, we missed and wiped out <<Insert enemy here>>"
Just a thought.

Quote from Anonymous 374862:
Mother-f-ing stupid federales at the Pentagon couldn't grab their butts with both hands!!

"ASK THE ETs to please disable and freeze this satellite!!"

They have done that before. The Disclosure Project reveals military officers telling their stories, HOW ETS disabled NUCLEAR MISSILES IN THEIR SILOS!

Or, would it be better for 32 f-ing pounds of plutonium to get dispersed in our atmosphere, you TURD HEADS!!!

I know. You don't know anything about it, and your job description is only top secret and not cosmic, which is 38 steps higher!!

So, be stupid!! Kill the planet, you Pentagon drones.

When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail; and when the only tool you use is a gun, all you can do is shoot, shoot, shoot!

Dumb and Dumber work at the Pentagon, and they are egged on by Cheney and the criminal NeoCons.

I wanna puke!

I think that gives a flavour of that thread lol. GLP is useful for a laugh sometimes...

Ah, GLP...I encountered them when I was researching Hurricane Gustav. I saw a bunch of posts about how it was a weapon created by the government or something. Absolute hilarity. :D

It actually suprises me a little that we don't get more of them on here during teh season, claiming that storms are being strengthened by HAARP / "Chemtrails" / Anything else...

Weather may delay operation

Some bad weather in the North Pacific may delay the shooting down of the satellite.Lets see what occurs during the day.

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon said Wednesday that the window of opportunity is now open for it to try to shoot down a failing spy satellite.

Here we go.

Neither of those articles says that, and both now say that bad weather could delay the shot.

You would think that since this was a recent 2006 launch the US would have sent the space shuttle up to fix the satellite and reorbit her if there was any value? Failing that perhaps they could have loaded her in the cargo bay of the space shuttle and brought her back to earth.

I'm sure someone must have thought up a robotic system that would attach explosive charges on failed satellites so they could be detonated safely later before reentry.

Once this object reaches an altitude low enough it will no longer have the overflight permissions allowed low earth orbit satellites. I doubt Russia or China would attempt to recover it in their air space but it might be enough of a nuisance to them to shoot it down.

And now we are to believe that the US anti ballistic missiles don't work when the sea is a little rough. I'm thinking lets save the 80 million and not test them.

Well, the contents of the satellite are classified, so they wouldn't have the shuttle crew repair it.
