I prefer the standard. More control, more ability to do different things when needed, no fear of accidentally putting it in reverse. Also, an automatic has more things that can go wrong, and when they do, you might as well junk the car. I'm driving an ottermatic now because this car was given to me.

Automatic for me. I tried to learn to drive a stick shift and it seemed like too much work.

I love a stick...assuming it hasn't been driven previously by either of my 2 stepdaughters..which means I'm out of luck and already driving an abused car

Manual, all the way! I've been driving 5 speeds for over 25 years now. Hubby's car is a 5 speed too. Which is difficult when teaching a new driver......that's another story!

A 5 speed is handy in the snow - you downshift coming down a hill, no need for brakes. Same going up - drop it in second, take it slow, and it's better than spinning your wheels.

Just my opinion though.....

Depends on the trip...

If my lovely wife is with me then automatic cause it leave one arm free.

However if I am alone and in the city well then down shifting is fun, plus it's easier to deal with mud, keeps the engine rev'd in high water situations etc.

Manual all the way! For all the reasons stated above. Control, gas mileage, speed, fun!
