Thank you very much, Annette and Jeremy! ((((HUGS))))
Jeremy,
I still remember when my Mom had a hysterectomy (they went ahead and removed her appendix during the same surgery)...this was back in the early 1970s when I lived in Cincy...an aunt of mine from IN came out and helped with things for a while during Mom's recuperation.
I told Mom that Dad and I will be cooking for a while...while she recovers...hope that hearing that doesn't make her feel worse.

Thank you very much, Mary, Donna and Daylily! ((((HUGS))))
UPDATE
Dad called and said Mom was moved to her room at 4 pm ET and the surgery was a complete success!!!
Thank you all so VERY much for your prayers, thoughts and well-wishes!!
Praise The Lord!!!!
He said the hole in her hernia area wasn't as big as first thought and that a small piece of mesh was put in over the hole in the muscle after the hole was sutured shut. Mom is of course still feeling the anesthesia (to be expected) and was feeling nauseous earlier but some anti-nausea medicine is gradually helping her...she is on a liquid food regimen for now...had some fluids delivered for her supper this evening but at the time was feeling nauseous so at the time I talked to Dad she hadn't eaten...but at least her IV line is helping keep her hydrated.
It may be at least a day or two before she's released to come home...I will be going with Dad to see her tomorrow.
All for now...
Eric

UPDATE #2
Also, I learned tonight that she had a temporary drain tube put in the area of her surgery procedure due to the natural way a body reacts to a foreign object...which is her mesh covering her closed hole in her umbilical muscle wall where the hernia had been. Everytime she has to move in bed it starts to bleed a little bit in the drainage tube which my Dad said is normal here in the early stages of her post-op. She may be in the hospital for a few days until the buildup of fluid in her muscle wall abades.

UPDATE 3
Mom came home late this morning!
But she's not totally out of the woods at least with the wound closure job...
this general surgeon from Wake Medical Center (Raleigh campus) it turns out is a nightmare from Hades!!
She doesn't know how to properly close surgical wounds it seems...wish you could see the staple job she did on my Mom. Even the hospital facilities weren't totally clean...dirty room floor where Mom was....Mom said she could just see black on her feet just walking to her room bathroom...sink would stop up...nurses were pretty much a joke, etc!!!
We're trying to see now if a better general surgeon from Duke Med Center in Durham will take a look at her SOON (we hope!!).
We're also praying and hoping that she won't develop a hematoma (sp?) in the surgical wound area.
Over all we're not happy campers at all....all past surgeries my family has had were NEVER a problem...don't know what the heck is up with today's medical world!
Feel like suing this INcompetent doc who operated on my mother!!
Anyone else had a nightmare medical result at the hands of half-baked docs or other staff care??

Thank you very much, David.
We've called Duke Med and will try to see if this better surgeon now can examine her...and if need be at all...take care of any problem that this other surgeon at Wake Med did in regards to wound closure, etc. Very surprisingly this doctor didn't even give my mother a sheet of post-op instructions...like most docs would...at least it would seem so. Mom's hernia area had gotten to a point where it was really aching and cramping, turning blue, too, etc., that this other surgeon at Duke wouldn't have been able to see her until this coming Thursday May 19th...and so we thought this other Wake Med surgeon who was available would turn out to be okay.
Sigh...

I am glad that she is home but you need a home nurse to visit if the dr orders it. My hubby had a home health nurse visit every day after he was discharged from the hospital when he was burned recently after the hurricanes. Talk to her Dr and ask the doctor to order a home health nurse to visit everyday until not needed.

Oh my Eric, it does sound as if your mother didn't receive the best care. I'm so sorry. Please run all of this past Shawn, she's a nurse at a topnotch hospital in Texas. She'll know what your next step should be. Unless a doctor is a partner of the original surgeon, it's very hard to get another doctor involved at this point. For ethical reasons, and for insurance purposes.
I didn't have complications with my surgeries and both times I received a post-op list of instructions. A nurse read them to me, to make sure I understood them and then I had to sign it. She had to witness my signature. The hospital where I had my surgeries was quite thorough.
Now my BIL had lots of things go wrong after his open heart surgery - the stroke, a major staff infection (had to have a central line put in, for very powerful meds to clear it up), a collapsed lung, another major open heart surgery, more valve replacements, etc. It was just one thing after another. We couldn't believe all he went thru for 3 long months.
Hang in there. Talk to Shawn. So sorry to hear this.
