Sound slike a conflict of interest to me. Who says they're buying their sugar from American farmers? My guess is they buy it from cheaper sources overseas. This has angered the American sugar farmers who get fat off of government subsidies.

What about honey as an alternate sweetener, for drinks? When I brew iced tea with boiling water, I add honey then. Because it mixes well. After it's chilled, with lemon juice too, it all tastes just as good as it does with sugar. A different taste but still, very good.

You just have to remember to add the honey after brewing and before deluting with cold water.

Honey is awesome, but it's got the same problems sugar has (ie calories and carbs).

actually, honey is nothing like sugar in that it is the most easily assimiliated in the system. honey does not have to go through the same inversion process during digestion that sugar does.

Honey supplies the body with substances for the formation of enzymes and other biological ferments to promote oxidation. It has distinct germicidal properties. Honey is a most valuable food, which today is not sufficiently appreciated. Its frequent if not daily use is vitally important.

True, I suppose it IS better than sugar. I withdraw my disagreement. :)

However, I drink a TON of sodas and I prefer to drink them completely calorie-free, and I find Splenda to be by far the best artificial sweetener.

Thanks Alicia - always thought honey was a healthy choice, over sugar.

Just don't feed it to a baby under the age of 1. If you do, they can contract botulism (sp?). I just remember reading that warning in all the baby books I read, eons ago.

Adding honey to hot coffee though just doesn't taste the same. I opt for sugar then. Honey just seems to go with tea.

Stay away from Splenda!!!!!

Last winter I bought this box low fat ice cream bars on accident, I tried them anyway, and really liked the taste. I had two of them, and also a flavored water (that I also found out later had splenda) that was also good. I rarely ever have stomach problems, but I woke up in the middle of that night, and puked my guts out!! Felt just fine after that, figured it was just a 24hr bug or something. A few days later I had another ice cream bar before bed, and once again I was puking my guts out so I finally made the connection that it was the splenda. Haven't touched anything with splenda in it since and have been just fine. Scary stuff

And if you're a diabetic or borderline diabetic...what then?

If you don't use Splenda on a daily basis...which my Mom and I don't...shouldn't be a problem.

More folks die in vehicle accidents, getting hit by lightning, etc., on average anyway.

Do you have any actual evidence for such a claim? Preferably evidence not advanced by the sugar farmers association.

As of 2005, only six human trials have been conducted on Splenda (sucralose). Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption. The two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subje

I used to belong to the Artificial Sweeteners of the Month club. They would send members a teaspoon of the newest sweetener each month so we could try it. They would send us a newsletter later that divulged which sweetener it was and in what color of cute little packet we could find it if we liked it.

The only problem was that the secretary of the club had sloppy handwriting. So the president made him use big block letters to write our addresses. They must have run out of new sweeteners to send because I haven't received any since late 2001.

I eat alot of fresh fruit...and I enjoy iced tea, too...but the tea goes better with a little sugar...or Splenda...whatever have ya.

Alot of foods out there can be bad down the road...so whatcha gonna do...I suppose have to live on a regimen of "cardboard and styrofoam" so to say.

I even have a diet soda on occasion...inspite of a potential side effect from Aspartame...can make your bowels "bounce around" in some peeps.

I drink a lot of ice tea in the summer. Do you all want to know a trick I heard about, to make it spiced tea? Add a few whole cloves during the brew phase. They float to the top, just remove them before adding sugar or honey and deluting with cold water. Enjoy!

Back to the Sugar/Spenda debate....
