I hate spiders, This week I had to open a water valve box that was in the ground-flipped the lid off and inside it was a large black shiney spider with a red hourglass staring at me-just the idea that it was only an inch or two from my hand
Im not sure how to identify a brown recluse other than the Violin which im not gonna get close enough to it to see without smashing it with a shoe. I had a very large brown spider over my bed crawling around my room about a month ago. It was brown with a large body and legs that would hang off my hand if I held it. It was super fast and almost looked blurry when it ran. I finally killed it with a broom and I could hear it crunch. Are Brown Recluses really fast like this and very large? Ive always heard they actually look like any other harmless spider and you normally wouldnt even notice it but this spider looked particularly large and dangerous.

I encountered one of those when I lived in Gautier, MS. It was big and brown. Big as a tarantula, but solid brown. I moved out two days later.

Argh!! Spiders have always sent me runnin' the other way too...but I'm working hard to learn about them and give them some respect!! They really DO have some beneficial traits! What would a hummingbird line it's tiny nest with if it weren't for those spider webs!!
Michigan should be added to that list....I have several friends....including a sister-in-law.... that have been bitten by the brown recluse. Around here, he's a small shy spider....most are not even aware when they've been bitten. Respecting them doesn't mean I LIKE 'em!!......p

Right before Spring Break in March I got bit at work in the green house by a Brown Recluse. Basically what you just describe is what mine did. It has been two months and I am still having problems with the spot. It is much better but left a nasty size sore on my stomach. Tell him to take care of it and take all of his meds. Also if it starts to get worse go back to the doctor. I feel for him because it hurts. I told my mom I would rather give birth to another 10 pounder without an epidural or painkillers than go through another brown recluse bite because of the pain.

Most Brown Recluse spiders are small and they hide...hence the name Recluse I reckon, they stay hidden most of the time and that is one reason that people don't see them often. I check all my shoes before I put my feet in them, I check the sheets before I crawl in. My Mom was bitten on her finger twice and almost lost her finger. I have seen some bad bites come in the office. These spiders venom is very toxic and will kill tissue, muscle, what ever it hits and of course can kill the person if they don't get treatment. Linda I am glad he is getting better. We usually don't see the patient until they have already been under treatment and the bites have not cleared up and we have to do surgery to remove the dead tissue and it has to heal from the inside out....those pictures (no I didn't go look but I have seen them before) are true to what can happen to some bites.
I had something "bite" my breast I know...but anyway I felt it while laying on the couch and brushed at it, thinking "skeeter", flea, what ever and then saw Mr. small brown spider crawling on the floor. Without thinking I swatted it with my shoe and smushed it....then I couldn't tell what kind of spider it was after being smushed on a brick floor with a very hard hit from a shoe. Anyway I had two blisters come up on my breast and had to do the most embarrassing thing every....I had to get my boss to look at my "boob" to see if they looked like brown recluse bites. Why go pay a doctor when I work for one right? He said they very well may be but he was too embarrassed to get too close to "inspect" them...I have worked for him for 25 years...rofl I don't know who was redder, him or me. Anyway he immediately put me on strong antibiotics and I had to take 2 courses and they finally healed up after having big holes after the blisters and of course the redness. I didn't have to get him to look at them again, I just told him what they looked like, it was better for both of us...it was really a very funny situation. I still have two white marks where these were and that is why I am so careful now. I also shake out all my shirts and bras before I put them own....these spiders stay hidden and will crawl in anything.
We had quite a few bites after Katrina, can you believe they all lived, dumb spiders! Anyway with everyone outside picking up all kinds of things they were in abundance everywhere and especially out at Northrup Grumman (Ingall's Shipbuilding) and Fredie Goldman or what ever its called now
and out at Chevron. So they aren't just inside...they are everywhere!!

Agree alicia-w, and the bad thing with spiders is, unless you hit them directly with the spray, you can't kill them, this was from my Terminix man that sprayed my house monthly (suppose to be quarterly but hey, we paid the money
) for spiders and bugs before Katrina decided it didn't need to be here anymore!
