In our case we were eligible for 2 checks, 2 kids under the age of 17. Barely! Nina was born in '87. Hubby made the mistake of mentioning the check(s) would be coming soon. And both kids got dollar signs in their eyes. Naturally! Then all eyes turned to me - what are we going to do with the money Mom? Yes, I was the party pooper - I said it's going on Visa! To pay off vacation! I was the lone voice this summer that said let's skip a vacation - tight budget - but hubby always says no, we need one. We do......but we have a family reunion this week. I wanted that to be our vacation. So I burst some bubbles that night.

The check is flat out GONE! I do wish I could have just handed it over to the kids. Sigh. Then Jim went down that road of how expensive it is to raise kids. You lose them everytime you do that. I could almost see them nodding off! Yeah, yeah Dad we get it......LOL

Do not feel guilty Mary.....You and your husband paid the taxes..not your kids. When they are out on their own making their way in the big bad world...paying taxes...then they will be the recipients of all thses great Government programs.

j - it's darn expensive raising kids and yes, we paid the taxes. Thanks!!! We've always been on the frugal side with them anyway. Xmas/Birthdays used to be $50. Then $75. Now it's somewhere up over $100. Then they see cousins getting hundreds of dollars of gifts each time. Our argument has been you can always find someone else *better* off than you, and worse off than you. Be happy with where you are. We don't even swap gifts between ourselves some years....but I'm getting of track. Guess you can tell I did want to hand them these checks.......a new stereo in Nina's room would have been nice. The bunk beds Laura's always wanted, w/ futon on the bottom, would have been nice too. Oh well....

We got our check. Unfortunately my husband made $22,822 last year instead of the required $23,000. Instead of $800 to pay for school clothes, supplies, and pay off some bills, we got $45.10 for two children. Now, I'm not complaining because it was $45 we didnt have before, but there is a huge difference between $45 and $800 for a difference in $178 earned.

LOL, I haven't even sent my taxes in yet! Just got them from the CPA this week! But we do get a nice refund and then I guess we'll be put in for the child tax rebate.
