The world doesn't stop because of a slowing economy. People still buy houses, they still buy cars, businesses still expand and grow. Money that is saved and invested is going into the economy. Just going out and throwing it away on junk as the president has asked us to do is not smart. It's that spendthrift attitude that has gotten Americans (both individually and as a nation) into deep debt.

I don't believe the president has told people to go out and spend the rebates on "junk". That is your own assessment. Many consummables are not junk, to say the very least.

I agree VB, If a rebate does come my way it will be spent on consumables, but it wont be wasteful consumables.

My classification of people buying "junk" was off base for many. However, it is silly to claim that saving or investing the money somehow takes it out of the economy.

If we do qualify for the rebate, it'll probably go into my Roth IRA so that I can reduce my weekly contributions for this year.

Now it's the time to buy land and other properties. They are cheap at the moment and in a year or two the economy will begin to grow once again.

I don't think you'll be able to buy much land/property with this rebate. You'll have a minimal downpayment at best and then a mortgage to pay on. Real estate here in Louisiana is at an all time high and way over inflated. My home is two to three times what i paid for it 15 years ago and that's before the improvements we've just made on it.

Also, you have to be able to FIND a house. I have been casually looking for nearly 2 years and quite intently for nearly a year now. I can't find a house that meets my criteria. :(

And if it would ever stop raining long enough for my yard to dry, maybe I could finish getting this one ready to sell. Ugh... fed up today. Been fighting freaking MUD all day!

There's plenty of straw huts in Beaumont, but I don't want to live in the Beaumont city limits, for several reasons. The outskirts are much more desirable, usually have more land, etc. I guess that's why I can't find what I'm looking for!

You're right and there are good buys now in the stock market. You just have to be in a good financial position to take advantage of it.
