and on that same topic... two weeks from tonight on the 28th ABC will air "Shrek the Halls" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at 8. Yesterday, they announced that a new episode of Pushing Daisies would air at 9 pre-empting Private Practice with Dirty Sexy Money still at 10. Likely due to the strike(it appears PP and DSM will have a couple of episodes in January or later, whenever ABC decides to air them while PD will have it's "finale" on December 5th).

Other strike news:

Brothers and Sisters will have several episodes in January or later(they are still shooting scripts actually) while DH will only have 1(and there's rumors that the tornado episode on the 2nd may be the "finale" because it will have plenty of stuff that makes people come back). DH and B&S are both pre-empted this week for the American Music Awards and then will return on the 25th.

Same goes for Grey's... appears it's finale will be December 6th, part 2 of a 2-part episode that starts next Thursday. A repeat of the season premiere will air on the 29th. Ugly Betty(which will also repeat it's premiere on the 29th) and Big Shots(which is on hiatus til at least Mid-December) will have several episodes leftover in January.

According to the cheat sheet from TVGuide.com, there are 3 episodes of DH left. B&S has 5 episodes left. Grey's has 4 to go. . .

That matches up with the info I have now... I hear B&S is still shooting scripts while DH and Grey's have shutdown, so it could have even more episodes.

Just curious...say this strike goes on for a good while and many actors and other staff are out of work for a long time. Are they able to turn around and file suit against wga for loss of wages?

Many of the actors back the WGA. In June, the SAG contract runs out. So what the WGA gets, the SAG and DGA gets.

As for other employees, I don't know if they have a case or whether they would try to pursue a case against the WGA or the ATMP.

I don't think so. There is no law that requires people to work.

This is what's wrong with strikes and why I have zero sympathy for unions in general, though. It puts other people out of work and inconveniences other people severely. If you don't like your job or your compensation, quit and find another one. Improve yourself through education and/or experience so that you can earn those higher wages and benefits. Unions do nothing but protect the incompetent.

Really? What if you like your CAREER and simply wish to fight for fair compensation for the newer ways that your work is being distributed? Furthermore, do you not realize that a lot of writers, actors, and directors actually have college degrees (and then some)?

I'm sure there are a lot who would be insulted by your reply.

:uarrow:

One of the few positive things I see coming from this strike.

None of the new shows last night did well at all. Private Practice does pretty good(and by far the best), but even that's not spectacular. Another good thing about this strike... shows that would have been cancelled will stick around because new episodes of low-rated shows is better than nothing.

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007

CBS used its veteran crime dramas to score a solid overall ratings win, though ABC nearly snagged the top spot in the adults 18-49 demographic.

The Eye averaged a 7.9 rating/13 share in primetime, beating ABC's 6.5/10 for the top spot. FOX's 4.5/7 was good for third. NBC, 4.1/7, came in fourth, and The CW trailed with a 2.7/4.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS led with a 3.5 rating, barely beating ABC's 3.4. FOX took third with a 2.9, followed by NBC, 2.3, and The CW 2.0.

ABC's "Pushing Daisies" led a soft 8 p.m. hour with a 5.8/9. CBS' "Kid Nation," 4.7/8, edged FOX's "Back to You," 4.6/8, and "'Til Death," 4.6/7, for second. "Phenomenon" came in fourth for NBC, while "America's Next Top Model" delivered a 3.4/6 for The CW.

"Criminal Minds" scored a 10.1/16 -- the night's best rating -- for CBS at 9 p.m. "Private Practice" put ABC in second with a 7.9/12. FOX stayed in third with "Kitchen Nightmares," which beat the slumping "Bionic Woman," 4.0/7, on NBC. "Gossip Girl" earned a 1.9/3 for The CW, a slight improvement over its usual performance.

At 10 p.m., "CSI: NY" kept CBS on top with an 8.8/15. "Dirty Sexy Money" posted a 5.7/9 for ABC, topping the 4.5/8 for "Life" on NBC.

Phenomenon is a JOKE! Why is Deal or No Deal not on this night?! NBC is a catastrophe on this night. Life actually grew out of BW. This show could be a decent hit with a better lead-in, but not behind the disaster known as Bubonic Woman.

8pm in general is just depressing... Pushing Daisies wins with a 5.8?! This is SWEEPS!

I continue to be miffed at Criminal Minds. Actually beat PP in the demo by .1

NBC GIVES 'LIFE' TO MONDAYS; 'DEAL' EXPANDS, MORE
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC's "Life" is getting a special post-"Heroes" showcase next month.

A two-part episode of the series will kick off on Monday, December 3 at 10:00/9:00c before concluding in its regular time period on Wednesday, December 5 at 10:00/9:00c.

The former installment will have the "Heroes" "fall finale" as its lead-in.

Meanwhile, "Deal or No Deal" is set for a special three-night stunt beginning Monday, December 10.

Two-hour editions are set for December 10 and December 12 with a one-hour installment on December 11 (all at 8:00/7:00c).

And finally, Sci Fi and USA will apparently drop their respective encores of "Bionic Woman" and "Life" after this week. No reason for the change was given.

Strike Outlaw? Lost Showrunner Returns to Work

by Craig Sjodin/ABC

Whatever you think about the writers strike, ya gotta feel for guys like Lost writer-producer Carlton Cuse. As a writer, he's on strike. But as a producer... mmm. Not so much. So even though he's a member of the WGA's negotiating committee, he's returning to work, at least to do some post-production on the eight episodes that have already been shot. "We feel we owe that to our fans," he tells the New York Times. "We would harm our franchise if we didn't do it ourselves." Who'll be next to punch back in? We'll keep you posted... In other strike news, um, did they just hear about it in Canada? Bionic Woman, which shoots in Vancouver, powered down just last week, and Battlestar Galactica wrap early up north this Friday... And although the Hollywood Reporter says that secret meetings are taking place that would bring the hosts of the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O'Brien back to their desks, nothing is expected to happen before Thanksgiving. — Ben Katner

:woo:

ABC has handed out a full-season pickup to the freshman drama "Dirty Sexy Money."

This is the fourth rookie ABC series to get a back-nine order and the first on any network to get a pickup since the start of the writers strike.

ABC launched the strongest slate of new series, including top new drama "Private Practice," top new comedy "Samantha Who?" and best-reviewed new series "Pushing Daisies," all previously picked up for a full season.

The network's success is overshadowed by the potential damage a long strike can do on its promising newcomers. A disruption in the run of those series just as they are gaining momentum could be damaging -- look at what happened to CBS' promising newcomer "Jericho" last year after it was taken off the air for months.

"Dirty," from ABC Studios, is executive produced by creator Craig Wright, Greg Berlanti, Josh Reims, Matthew Gross and Bryan Singer.

URGENT NEWS! BOTH SIDES AGREE TO GO BACK INTO TALKS POST-THANKSGIVING

The date they return to the bargaining table is November 26th. I picked up rumors about this starting about two hours ago, and I've just confirmed it from a WGA source. Now the Writers Guild of America has just issued a statement: "Leaders from the WGA and the AMPTP have mutually agreed to resume formal negotiations on November 26. No other details or press statements will be issued." The exact same statement was just issued moments later by the Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers.

Is this the BEST news ever?!

Prison Break is done for the Fall. I watch K-Ville, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad. I look forward to 24, but it will be delayed though because of the strike.

The 1988 strike had a profund impact even today. Viewership of television is lower than pre-strike.

An update on current shows - how many episodes have been filmed, aired and if any are left - from TV Guide's website.

My apologies if this info has been posted already.

Ausiello Report
UPDATED Strike Chart: How Long Before Your Shows Go Dark?

[UPDATED 11/17/07] There seems to be little doubt that the writers' strike will result in a shorter TV season, but just how short are we talking? Well, as you might've guessed, it varies from show to show. Those programs that are either highly efficient (Friday Night Lights) or have entered the season with a backlog of episodes (Men in Trees, Law & Order: SVU) will be in originals well into the new year. But series with tighter production schedules (i.e., nearly every half-hour comedy) will go dark almost immediately. Of course, figuring out how many episodes remain in your favorite shows' arsenals requires a lot of numbers crunching — and as I've come to learn, the only thing you Ausholes despise more than a Wednesday without AA is mathematics. With that in mind, I pulled together this incredibly handy (and 85 percent complete) cheat sheet. Keep in mind: The information below is subject to change, particularly if both sides get back to the bargaining table and resolve this frakkin' thing!

30 Rock: Ten episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Aliens in America: Seventeen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are 10 left.

Back to You: Nine episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are two left.

The Big Bang Theory: Eight episodes were produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are zero left.

Bionic Woman: Roughly nine episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are two left.

Bones: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Boston Legal: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Brothers & Sisters: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Carpoolers: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Cavemen: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Chuck: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left.

CSI: NY: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Desperate Housewives: Ten episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Dirty Sexy Money: Eleven episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Friday Night Lights: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Gossip Girl: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Greek: Eight new episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are eight left.

Grey's Anatomy: Eleven episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Heroes: Eleven episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are three left.

House: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Jericho: Seven episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are seven episodes left.

Las Vegas: Nineteen episodes will be produced. Nine have aired, so there are 10 left.

Law & Order: SVU: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Life is Wild: Twelve episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Lost: Eight episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are eight episodes left.

Medium: Nine episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are nine episodes left.

Men in Trees: Nineteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are 13 left.

My Name is Earl: Thirteen episodes will be produced (that includes two one-hour eps, which count double). Ten episodes have aired, so there are three left.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: Eight episodes have been produced. No episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Numbers: Twelve episodes will be produced. Eight have aired, so there are four left.

One Tree Hill: Twelve episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are twelve episodes left.

The Office: Twelve half-hour episodes will be produced. Twelve half-hour episodes have aired, so there is zero half-hour episode left.

'QUARTERLIFE' GETS SIX AT NBC
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick's "quarterlife" is making the leap back to television - this time to NBC as strike-contingent programming.

The online series, which bowed this past Sunday on MyspaceTV.com (and the following day at quarterlife.com), is comprised of 36 eight-minute episodes which premiere every Sunday and Thursday. Bitsie Tulloch stars as a young woman whose overly truthful video blog spills the closest secrets of her friends.

The Peacock has committed to airing said installments as six one-hour episodes as early as this spring as well as become a distribution partner for its DVD and foreign sales. The network got first crack at "quarterlife" as the result of the company's investment in the social networking website linked to the show. Herskovitz and Zwick nevertheless will retain full ownership of the property, which was developed through a series of self-financing deals with advertisers and private investors.

"quarterlife" began as a drama pilot at ABC/Touchstone Television for the 2005-06 season starring Austin Nichols, Jacob Pitts, Jonathan Bennett, Merritt Weaver, Rachel Blanchard, Reggie Austin and Shiri Appleby. The concept then was subsequently revamped for its online venture with a new cast - Maite Schwartz, Scott Michael Foster, David Walton, Michelle Lombardo, Kevin Christy, Barrett Swatek and Tulloch.

Also as part of its leap back to television, Herskovitz and Zwick will begin talks with the various guilds to ensure proper compensation for its members that worked on the series. The show's production company, quarterlife, inc., however isn't a WGA signatory, meaning it can continue to produce new scripted material - even during the WGA strike.

Herskovitz, Zwick, Devon Gummersall and Lucy Teitler penned the show's first season while Herskovitz, Eric Stoltz, John Sacret Young and Catherine Jelski served as directors with Josh Gummersall producing.
