Maybe the flag was worn and he was putting up a new one.

If something is old, we throw it away.....big deal.

Well Jerry, they are correct in that there are accepted appropriate means to dispose of a flag, and this guy, being military, should have known and employed those methods. I agree that it's an overreaction though.

And I apologize for breaking my promise to stop posting on this thread. :D

Unfortunately, it happens frequently to nearly everyone who travels 100,000 miles a year. The laptop rule is universal, though, as is the pointy object and lighter rule. But if you want to pull a Richard Reid with matches instead of a lighter, it's A-okay. :)

Consider yoruself extremely lucky! :)

You haven't had to take your shoes off, your laptop out of your bag, or dispose of any pointy objects or lighters? Or do you just not travel with those items?

but, we're TOTALLY getting away from the issue of respect for symbols of this great country.

I guess the attitude is what makes the difference between a US resident and a citizen.

So do you think it's disrespect to not stand when they play the National Anthem?

Do you think it's disrespectful to not remove your hat when the flag passes at a parade or when the Anthem is played?

What about placing your hand over your heart...

Have you ever seen a Missing Man formation and not had cold chills?

but then, the anthem is just a song, like the flag is just a piece of cloth.

BS.

After 26 years with the USAF, people like you just make my blood boil.

Most flags are nylon and shouldnt be burnt

Maybe the guy had his reasons for disposing of it how he did.

I think people should stay out of his business.

i wear slip on shoes, dont take my laptop overseas (it doesnt work with their electricity anyway and the govt doesnt pay for converters for us) and i dont smoke (thus no need for a lighter) nor do i take any pointy objects.

and tell the families of the 9-11 victims that these searches are stupid. they arent.

Yes and yes.

What about placing your hand over your heart...

Always do it, and sing along. I always remove my cap if I'm wearing one.

Have you ever seen a Missing Man formation and not had cold chills?

honestly I've never seen one in person, but I would probably feel as you do abotu it.

but then, the anthem is just a song, like the flag is just a piece of cloth.

Agreed.

Actually you don't need a converter. You can get a set of plug adaptors from Radio Shack for about $10 that will cover all of Europe. The transformer on your laptop will take 110 (USA) or 220 (Europe) with absolutely no problems.

Anyway, what about when you travel domestically?

That said, whether you take those things with you or not, those rules are universal in the USA. they are not applied elsewhere except when flying TO the USA.

i dont travel with a laptop. i'm usually too busy to mess with it anyway. it's a mere distraction for the real work we have to get done on the road.

a piece of cloth ------ hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
What a crock of bull $hit.

My grandfathers, father, uncles and nephews fought for your right to consider Old Glory a "piece of cloth". I feel honored that they fought for my rights but I'm not so sure about yours. I feel nothing but respect for my flag and feel that all who have died for my rights are represented in that wonderful "piece of cloth". I honor it and thank God for its presence.

I think my Marine pilot nephew would be glad to come down and help kick some unpatriotic butt as he waves his flag proudly and disposes of it correctly.

I have often "reminded" people and organizations about flag etiquette when I see (a) our flag being flown in tatters, (b) displayed incorrectly, (c) abused (having it touch the ground by a well-meaning, but clueless chap), etc.

Overreaction? I think not. That Flag of ours has flown over five generations of American soldiers and fliers in my family, and I will NOT see it dishonored. :larrow:

I have seen TOO MANY missing man formations. As a USAF active duty O-3 (Captain to the civilians), a Desert Storm veteran, and a USAF reserve retired O-4 (Major), I have had my share of watching that ritual far too many times for comfort. I do not like anyone making light of our flag, or our country. I don't always agree with everything the politicians say, but when it comes time to speak for our country and defend her, I stand up and say-"I am A PROUD AMERICAN." I trust nobody has a problem with that. :D
