I've learned so much from his show, he's been a common guest in my house (tv) for years. Never a dull moment.

R.I.P

I feel sorry for his wife Terri. I imagine she will try to keep running the Australia Zoo but it will be really tough without Steve Irwin's expertise and income. She is originally from the U.S. They also have two kids. There is more about Terri Irwin here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terri_Irwin

Is the Australia Zoo a non profit organization? I would be willing to donate to them.

SHOCKING DEATH CAUGHT ON TAPE
Brisbane Aus
Tue Sep 5 10am

Fatally injured by a stingray, Steve Irwin pulled its barb out of his chest before losing consciousness, dramatic footage of his last moments reveals.

Friend John Stainton said the footage of the stingray attack which took the life of the Crocodile Hunter on the Great Barrier Reef Monday was "shocking".
Mr Irwin, 44, died after the stingray barb punctured his chest while snorkelling off Port Douglas, in far north Queensland, Monday.

A cameraman captured the incident during filming for Irwin's new project with daughter Bindi, eight, that was to debut in the United States next year.
"I did see the footage and it's shocking," Mr Stainton told reporters today in Cairns.
"It's a very hard thing to watch because you're actually witnessing somebody die ... and it's terrible."

Mr Stainton, also a producer and director of Irwin's popular television shows, said the footage showed Mr Irwin pulling the barb out of his chest before losing consciousness.
'He's gone'
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.

"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down."
Mr Stainton, who was aboard Mr Irwin's vessel Croc One when the tragedy occurred, said it was likely the television star and naturalist died almost immediately as a result of the stingray's blow.
"(He was) probably a metre coming over the top of it," he said.

"He was underwater. I think, and the coroner's report will say what happened, but I think he died fairly instantly."
Mr Stainton said he was still in disbelief that a stingray could claim his close friend's life.
"He always pushed himself to the very limits but I thought he was invulnerable and I think he did too.

"I think we all had that belief that we'd pull through whatever situation we were in and he has been in some very close shaves with snakes and crocodiles.
"I would never imagine it to come from something like a stingray."

However, the footage of Irwin's final moments alive may never be shown to the public, the head of the US TV company that broadcasts his show said today.
Billy Campbell, the president of Discovery Networks, which owns the Animal Planet channel, said it was far too early to decide what footage viewers would see from Irwin's fatal trip on the Great Barrier Reef.

Talks would take place with Irwin's wife, Terri, at a suitable time, he said.

Irwin was shooting footage for a new show he was doing with his eight-year-old daughter, Bindi.

Bindi's show was scheduled to air on the Animal Planet and Discovery Kids channels in the US later this year or in 2007, but its future is now in doubt.
Campbell, who will fly to Australia for Irwin's funeral, said he would also ask Terri whether she would like Bindi's show to go ahead.

"In terms of the Bindi show, a lot of that will depend on the conversations I have with Terri in a couple of days," he said.
"I want to give her a few days to mourn and think through things.

I loved watching Steve handle various "critters" - some, made me
close my eyes and turn away (spiders, snakes, and such!)... I, too,
am amazed that his life was claimed by an underwater entity -
I was sure that it might be a Croc, since he seemed to always
get WAY too close!

They're showing clips from his shows on "Animal Planet", tonight.

Definitely - R.I.P., Steve.

And to dispell any fears, Stingrays are not aggresive at all, I've handled them, they are much more afraid of you then we are of them.

But Steve was one of a kind, he'll NEVER be replaced. Most of what I know animals I learned from his show. He should be remembered for his love of animals and NOT the sometimes insane things he did.

I doubt that will be a problem. There were enough people who loved this lunatic that money will come pouring in.

Steve Irwin was definitely one of a kind. Sadly, he will be missed.

That's right. A stingray usually responds to a disturbance by swimming away.

Usually, they'll only sting if somebody steps on them.

Did anyone watch any of the Animal Planet specials last night? They re-aired two Croc Hunter specials a couple of times. I just lost it  when they showed him as a child (probably 9 or 10 or so), running through the reptile park where his dad worked, and stopping to pet a baby croc, saying "Look at this little beauty" with the same enthusiasm he had as an adult. It was as if he was born to do it all his life.

It was so touching to watch. There were plenty of scenes with him doing what he did best -- sharing the world of wildlife with us. But they also showed him with Terri when she gave birth to Bindi (such a proud dad). And there's a tearjerker of a video on YouTube of him crying after a crocodile died.

Tonight, Animal Planet is airing a special tribute to him.

Yes I watched most of them last night. I have seen them before but was extra special to watch them last night. He has such a big heart and loves everything around him immensely and whole heartedly. I remeber seeing one of these specials a while back and watching him break down speaking of his old dog Sui, he loved that dog like it was his child. Loved it so much he named his first born after that dog. His daughters name in Bindi Sue. Her first name is from his favirote Croc Bindi. That shows how strong his love for animals is right there. I will be watching tonight as well. I still can't believe he is gone.

I knew the shows were on AP, but I also knew that I couldn't watch it. I would have been a mess. It will probably be a while before I can watch his shows and not break down completely.

Steve Irwin's death also sent ripples to the Dallas World Aquarium.

World Aquarium crocodiles give reminder of Irwin's legacy

By JANET ST. JAMES / WFAA ABC 8

DALLAS, Texas — People across North Texas around the world mourned the death of Steve Irwin, TV's popular "Crocodile Hunter."

Irwin was filming a new series in Australia's Great Barrier Reef Monday when a stingray's tail barb fatally punctured his heart. He was 44.

Experts say stingrays are usually very gentle creatures.

At the Dallas World Aquarium, Irwin's loss was deeply felt by animal lovers.

I watched a show tonight about it all and most of his income went back into the park and to charity!

All of the income from the movie they made was donated to some charity!

I hope terry stays here and keeps it going which i know she will! i had a thought that she would move back to the US but that was just silly!

John, I think she will stay so that her kids can grow up there at the zoo and possibly take over the business when they are adults. I wonder if his young son will be like he was. I just can't imagine what Terri, the kids, Steve's father, and of course, his best mate Wes, are going through right now.

Me neither, but I really hope this doesn't stop her passion, or the kids. Life is meant to be seized whatever the cost.
