BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein will be executed by Saturday, an Iraqi judge said Friday after the United States reportedly transferred him to Iraqi custody.

“The American side has notified us that they have handed over the president to the Iraqi authorities,” said Khalil al-Dulaimi, head of Saddam’s defense team.

Munir Haddad, a judge on the appeals court that upheld Saddam’s death sentence, said that “Saddam will be executed today or tomorrow. All the measures have been done.”

Well, I'm working until 7 tonight, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to see the news break as it happens. And I *was* going to watch football tonight, but since it's not the Gators, I'll skip it. :)

Anyone think it will happen in the next 8 hours?

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein could be hanged within hours, a senior Iraqi source told Reuters on Friday after Saddam's lawyer said the former president had been handed over by U.S. forces to Iraqi authorities for execution.

"Things have changed in the past three hours. There were some issues ... and now that is resolved so it seems it's possible he may be hanged tonight," the source, who is in a senior position of authority, said after a day of confusion.

However, the start of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha on Saturday raised the possibility of a delay until after the week -long holiday is over, he added: "It's not certain," he said.

The hanging may occur before midnight,Iraq Time or before 4 PM EST so we will wait and see.

First, abcnews.com and now foxnews.com are both reporting that he's still in US custody.

I think there may be some confusion about "who" has him because maybe he has been taken from the facility wherever he was being kept in "US" custody, but he's still in US hands, in transport to wherever the exchange will take place.

Just guessing....

Yes,there is conflicting information comming out of Iraq in terms of who has the custody as TV in Iraq reports Saddam Hussein is in Iraqui custody but other reports suggest the contrary, but it looks that the hanging is imminent in a matter of hours as on saturday there will be a holiday in Iraq and they want to do it before saturday arrives. In other words folks, the clock is ticking.

Attorneys for Saddam Hussein are seeking a temporary restraining order in a U.S. court to block the former Iraqi leader's execution, CNN confirms.

So more drama about this that if it's granted, delays for a few more hours what is inevitable.

Stall tactic. Iraqi law bans execution during an Islamic holiday, and one begins on Saturday, called Eid al-Adha. So, more or less, we may not see it happen until after that holiday is over.

How could (or why would) a US court have any say-so in regards to an Iraqi court ruling?

Probably because he is in the custody of the US authorities in Iraq. So, the attorneys are hoping that the court can order that Saddam not be transfered to Iraqi officials. It's a delaying tactic, to give Saddam four more days. Four more days to come up with another delaying tactic.

From what I have read, Saddam has "legally" been transfered to Iraqi authorities. But for security reasons, he is "physically" in US custody. The US is providing the security for the execution.

Official: Saddam to be executed tonight

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writers 6 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.

A top Iraqi official said Saddam will be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, Baghdad time, or 10 p.m. Friday EST.

Brent, remember that for security reasons the hanging wont be televised live. The information about the official hanging of Saddam will be out after the hanging occurs so it depends on what time they do it to then the press get it.In other words, they say around 6 AM iraq time but the information comes a while later.
