FBI Says It Caught 'Fishing Hat Bandit'

By JOSHUA FREED, Associated Press Writer

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The FBI said Monday it has caught the Fishing Hat Bandit, a bank robber who has committed nearly two dozen holdups in the Twin Cities over the past year and a half.

John Douglas Whitrock, 56, of Burnsville, was arrested on Friday after a robbery at a credit union in Edina.

"Based on the investigation to date, evidence has been developed that allegedly ties Mr. Whitrock to multiple bank and credit union robberies in the metropolitan area," FBI spokesman Paul McCabe said. "We are confident that the suspect known as the `Fishing Hat Bandit' is no longer a threat to the banking community."

The Fishing Hat Bandit often wore floppy hats during his holdups.

So far, Whitlock is charged with only one holdup.

Public defender Andrea George did not immediately return a call for comment.

In the Edina case, the robber wore a jacket with the hood pulled up and a nylon over his face, and made off with $4,683, including several "bait" bills — currency from which the serial numbers were recorded beforehand.

The credit union's president followed the man outside and watched him enter a garage, then called police. Police used a winch to drag a car out of the garage, and found Whitrock hiding inside the trunk with a stack of money, authorities said.

He was jailed for a bail hearing on Tuesday.

Whitrock was arrested in a maroon Chevy Lumina; a similar vehicle was tied to a Dec. 17 robbery by the Fishing Hat Bandit at a credit union in Northfield.

Two Pa. Teens Arrested in Airborne Egging

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Two teenagers were arrested on charges they bombed their high school with a bucket of eggs from a low-flying airplane.

During the incident last June, panicked officials evacuated about two dozen people from the top floors of a hotel when the two-seat plane circled low over downtown Gettysburg, then disappeared.

"You hate to think what might have happened — even unintentionally," prosecutor Brian Sinnett said. He called the prank "one of the most bizarre cases that I've been involved in."

The two Gettysburg High students were arrested Friday on charges including risking a catastrophe and reckless endangerment. They were caught after telling others about the incident, authorities said. They were not identified because they are juveniles.

During the incident, police tried to signal the plane using flashlights. Fog and darkness prevented authorities from reading the tail number.

The airplane, which belonged to the father of the boy at the controls, apparently landed at a private family airstrip. The boy does not have a pilot's license, Sinnett said.

Spaniard Gets 18 Months for Stealing $1

MADRID, Spain (AP) - A Spaniard was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison for stealing the equivalent of a dollar from a pay phone 13 years ago.

The man was convicted of breaking open a phone in a bar in the city of Lleida in northeastern Spain and stealing 125 pesetas — US$1.09 at the exchange rate then, the news agency Efe reported. His name was not given.

The trial was delayed repeatedly, either because the suspect failed to show up or was in a drug rehabilitation program. Administrative snags also slowed things down, Efe said.

Besides being sent to jail the man was ordered to pay the bar owner euro425 (US$560) in damages.

Carol-singing burglar accidentally shoots himself in leg

MARTINSBERG, W. Va. (Court TV) — A home burglar with a fondness for holiday tunes will have to sing them in prison.

Paul K. Hardy allegedly broke into a couple's home on New Year's Eve, held them hostage at gunpoint and forced them to play the piano while he sang Christmas tunes, according to police in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Sgt. John Sherman said Hardy, 40, gained entrance into the home by scaling a ladder and entering through a rear door on the second-floor balcony. The homeowners were downstairs watching television when the burglar confronted them with one of their own handguns and forced them to give him money and a bag for the other guns he had stolen.

The burglary then turned into a holiday musical.

Hardy reportedly noticed a piano in the home and ordered the male homeowner to play the instrument.

"He told them he wanted to hear Christmas music," Sgt. Sherman said. "While the man played, [Hardy] sang 'Silent Night,' 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,' and 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.'"

The holiday carols appeared to have put the burglar in a giving mood — Sgt. Sherman said Hardy offered to order pizza for his hostages. They declined.

Hardy began to unload his handgun and, in the process, accidentally shot himself in the leg. The couple dialed 911. When officers arrived, they found Hardy lying on the couch with the stolen money, guns, and a hatchet.

The caroling burglar was treated at a local hospital and then taken to the Eastern Regional Jail, where police charged him with burglary, wanton endangerment and armed robbery. He's being held on $95,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 10.

Customer goes on rampage after restaurant runs out of french fries

DUBOIS, Penn. (Court TV) - In the aftermath of Gregg Luttman's rampage at a Burger King in DuBois, Penn., other area fast-food restaurants are hereby warned to keep their kitchens well-stocked with french fries.

According to Sandy Township Police, Luttman went berserk when he attempted to order a meal around 5 p.m. New Year's Day and discovered that the restaurant had run out of french fries.

Police Sgt. Rod Fairman said when Luttman and two friends approached the drive-thru window to order a meal, he was told that the restaurant was out of fries. Luttman allegedly became irate and uttered several profanities. He then drove up to the pick-up window, where he continued cursing and made obscene hand gestures at an employee.

The 22-year-old man then drove to the parking lot and entered the restaurant with a male friend. They repeatedly cursed at the workers and demanded to see the manager. The manager called police.

When Luttman returned to the parking lot, he discovered two employees taking down his license-plate number. Luttman then attempted to run them over, Fairman said. The two workers escaped without injuries.

Luttman was arrested after a short police chase and charged with disorderly conduct, reckless endangerment and driving, and a slew of other charges. He was released from the Clearfield County Jail after posting $2500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court January 14.

Robbery suspect locks keys in car

LAKE STATION, Ind. (Court TV) - Dispatchers at the Lake Station police department could tell Dan Grigg was having a hard time with his getaway attempt. The convenience store he had just robbed was right across the street.

According to the Indiana Post-Tribune, on Dec. 23, Griggs stole three cartons of cigarettes from a convenience store located across from the police department. But when he got to his car, he realized that he had locked himself out.

As the store clerk called police, Griggs reportedly returned to the store and grabbed a broom. When dispatchers who took the call realized the crime was across the street, they watched as Griggs smashed a window to gain access to his car.

An officer arrived at the scene as Griggs began his getaway and a brief chase ensued, the report said. The chase ended when Griggs collided with an oncoming police car. He fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended.

Police charged Griggs with felony robbery. He's being held without bond.

Police: Diner Operators Made Meth at Night

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - What the owners of The West Main Cafe were apparently cooking up at night has landed them in jail.

Police said they believe the operators of the restaurant were making methamphetamine in the kitchen on the same equipment they were using to cook food for customers.

Agents found meth in a room next to the kitchen, coffee filters with drug residue and other ingredients associated with the manufacturing of the drug, said Larry Johnson, director of the Fifth Judicial District Drug Task Force.

People eating at the restaurant at the time of a police raid on Wednesday were asked to leave, and their food sat on the tables as agents inventoried items seized from the cafe.

Johnson said the two restaurant operators were apparently cooking the drugs at night when the restaurant was closed. According to a police report, flammable chemicals also were found in the kitchen and could have ignited.

The restaurant was closed indefinitely.

Pair Arrested for Telling Lawyer Jokes

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Did you hear the one about the two guys arrested for telling lawyer jokes? It happened this week to the founders of a group called Americans for Legal Reform, who were waiting in line to get into a Long Island courthouse.

"How do you tell when a lawyer is lying?" Harvey Kash reportedly asked Carl Lanzisera.

"His lips are moving," they said in unison.

While some waiting to get into the courthouse giggled, a lawyer farther up the line Monday was not laughing.

He told them to pipe down, and when they did not, the lawyer reported the pair to court personnel, who charged them with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

"They just can't take it," Kash said of lawyers in general. "This violates our First Amendment rights."

Dan Bagnuola, a spokesman for the Nassau County courts, said the men were "being abusive and they were causing a disturbance." He said he did not have the name of the lawyer who complained.

Americans for Legal Reform monitors the courts and uses confrontational tactics to push for greater access for the public. The pair said that for years they have stood outside courthouses on Long Island and mocked lawyers.

On Monday, however, Kash said he was due in court to answer a drunken driving charge from a year and a half ago. The men are due back in court on the disorderly conduct charge next month.

Naked Jogger Tasered, Arrested By Arkansas Police

WEST MEPHIS, Ark. (Drudge Report/AP) -- Arkansas' naked jogger has been zapped.

For months, officers have been getting reports about a man making late-night runs in the buff. On Monday, police said they think they got their mystery jogger.

Fate Patterson, 39, of West Memphis, was arrested after he ran past a police car and failed to stop when he was ordered to do so by officers. Police chased him and were able to rein him in by using a Taser.

Patterson was charged with indecent exposure, fleeing and resisting arrest.

Mike Allen, assistant chief of the West Memphis police department, said that it did not initially appear that the man was mentally ill. He did not disclose his reasons for running without his clothes.

"You know, this one has just got me kind of speechless," said Allen

'Miracle Worker' Accused of Drug Smuggling

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) - Suriname police have detained a so-called miracle worker for conspiring to smuggle cocaine to the Netherlands, police said Thursday.

The man was detained arrested Tuesday, following the arrest of two cocaine smugglers at an airport in the capital, Paramaribo, police said.

In Suriname, clients consult miracle workers, or miracle doctors, to obtain exceptional powers like magic protection in the form of amulets.

The miracle worker had given the cocaine smugglers — Dutch nationals returning to the Netherlands — the power to go through customs without being detected, authorities said.

The drug couriers were arrested with 4.4 pounds of cocaine on Sunday, police said.

The three people in custody will probably be charged next week, police said.

It is the first time anyone has been detained for playing the role of a miracle worker in drug trafficking, although it is believed miracle workers are often hired by traffickers.

This former Dutch colony of 437,000 residents is a growing transshipment point for South American drugs destined for Europe and Brazil.

'Ghost' who haunted Italian castle gets jail

ROME, Italy (AFP) - A Polish woman who pretended to be a ghost and "haunted" an Alpine castle was sentenced to four months in prison by an Italian court.

Police were called in to investigate mysterious creaking doors and other unexplained nocturnal noises heard in 15th century Castel Coldrano, near the Swiss and Austrian borders, by a female occupant who ran the castle's cultural centre.

Video cameras placed by investigators revealed the noises to be man -- or woman -- made, and arrested the 42-year-old Pole, whose husband worked for the centre.

Police said she was motivated by "a personal rancour" against the manager, and charged her with harrassment and incidental damage to the castle.

Listerine Drinker Arrested for DUI

ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) - A woman who admitted drinking three glasses of Listerine mouthwash had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when she was arrested for drunken driving, police said Friday.

The woman, identified by police Sgt. Mike Shadbolt as 50-year-old Carol A. Ries, was arrested Sunday night and released on personal bond the next day. She was to be arraigned late next week on a misdemeanor charge of operating under the influence of liquor, Shadbolt said.

Police also found an open bottle of Listerine in Ries' car, and asked Lenawee County prosecutors Friday to authorize a warrant charging her with having an open intoxicant in a motor vehicle, Shadbolt said. Calls to the prosecutor's office were not answered after business hours.

Ries showed signs of intoxication after her car rear-ended another vehicle Sunday, Shadbolt said. She told police she had not consumed any alcohol and also passed a Breathalyzer test, but "there was something not quite right about her," Shadbolt said.

She failed a second test using different equipment and, under further questioning, admitted to drinking three glasses of Listerine earlier in the day, Shadbolt said.

According to Listerine manufacturer Pfizer Inc.'s Web site, original formula Listerine contains 26.9 percent alcohol, more than four times that of many malt liquors. Other varieties contain 21.6 percent alcohol.

No telephone listings for a Carol Ries could be found.

Alleged Drunk Lawyer Defends DUI Suspect

McKEAN, Pa. (AP) - An attorney was arrested for drunken driving as he left a hearing for a client accused of the same thing, state police said.

During Wednesday's hearing in a McKean district justice's office, a state police trooper noticed attorney Wayne G. Johnson Sr. might be drunk, said Trooper Robert Thompson.

The trooper, who was testifying in the DUI case against Johnson's 20-year-old client, called a state police barracks. By the time backup arrived, Johnson was in his car, Thompson said.

Johnson failed field sobriety tests and was charged with drunken driving, Thompson said. His blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest was not available Friday, state police said.

Johnson's receptionist said Friday he had no comment.

Police: Man Uses Cardboard Gun in Robbery

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A man who used a cardboard gun to rob a bank apparently wasn't paying much attention when he cased the building earlier and failed to notice it was across the street from an office used by Caddo Parish sheriff's detectives.

Employees told authorities they had seen the man hanging around the business earlier in the day, sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said. He showed up again later Thursday, wearing a bandana and brandishing what looked like a gun.

"He demanded an undisclosed amount of money from the teller" then took off on foot, Chadwick said.

Deputies immediately responded along with detectives from across the street. Together, they began blocking off driveways and setting up a perimeter around the area.

Det. Stacy Cowgill saw the suspect crossing the road, trying to stay in the woods. Cowgill chased the man and arrested him without incident eight minutes after deputies were dispatched.

"He had the money in his front pocket," Cowgill said. "He told us when I got him the gun was made out of cardboard."

A short time later, deputies found two rolls of paper taped together to resemble a gun.

Ricky Lawrence Banks was booked into Caddo Correctional Center on a charge of first-degree robbery.

"You can't be very bright and rob a bank right across the street from a detective office," Cowgill said.

Mother uses 5-year-old as burglary lookout

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Penn. (Court TV) - For Joann Monica Epperson, it's never too early to get children acquainted with the family business.

The 29-year-old Pennsylvania mother was sentenced Jan. 5 for a home burglary in which she used her 5-year-old son as a lookout.

According to Franklin County Prosecutor T. R. Williams, a Franklin couple returned to their home on the evening of July 12, 2004, and found Epperson's son in the doorway.

"The homeowners overheard [Epperson] telling the boy, 'Tell me when they're coming,'" Williams said.

The couple entered their home and reportedly found Epperson removing jewelry and coins from a jewelry box. Epperson told the homeowners that their daughter had given her permission to take clothing and jewelry from the residence. The couple called police.

Police arrested the burglar after confirming that she did not know the couple's daughter. Epperson was charged with burglary and theft, but Williams said she pleaded guilty to one count of burglary as a result of a plea deal. No charges were filed against Epperson for her son's involvement in the incident.

Epperson was sentenced to 23 months of immediate punishment beginning with two months in a work-release program in prison, followed by four months of house arrest with electronic monitoring.

Williams said the remainder of Epperson's sentence would involve periods of intense probationary supervision and standard probation.

Cabbie helps nab inmate who escaped one day before release

ATAUGA, Ala. (Court TV) - One more day in jail was one day too many for Kevin Bradley Nelson.

Police say the 35-year-old man had a day left to serve in his 10-day sentence for misdemeanor traffic violations when he failed to return to the Autauga Metro Jail from his work-release program Jan. 7.

Prattville Police Chief Alfred Wadsworth said Nelson instead spent the night behind a grocery store and robbed a Rite Aid pharmacy the next morning.

Nelson allegedly entered the store at about 11:30 a.m. and pretended he had a gun. He stole money from the cash register and fled on foot. The escapee then walked two blocks to a hospital and used a phone to call a cab.

Unfortunately for Nelson, the cab that responded was equipped with a police scanner that had picked up information about the recent robbery.

When Nelson exited the hospital, the driver recognized him, Wadsworth said.

The cabbie picked up his passenger and drove him to a nearby police car. The officer also recognized the suspect, Wadsworth said. Nelson exited the cab and fled back to the hospital, where he was captured by other officers.

Police returned Nelson to the Metro Jail and charged him with first-degree robbery and attempted escape. He's being held on two $10,000 bonds and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 2.

"I imagine that he's looking at quite a few years this time around," Metro Jail Capt. Billy Brown said.

Purse-snatcher trapped inside laundromat with his victim

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (Court TV) - Isaac Ramos' purse-snatching attempt turned out to be a wash.

The Texas man allegedly stole the purse of a woman who was inside a laundromat, but when he tried to flee, he found himself locked inside the establishment, along with the victim and her mother.

According to Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Mannrique, Ramos, 23, was allegedly hawking stolen material outside the laundromat on Dec. 31 when he looked in and saw that the woman was away from her purse. Ramos entered the laundromat, grabbed the purse and made a dash for the door. But the purse-snatcher was unable to open the automatic door, which had somehow been locked.

The two women pounced on Ramos and chased him around the laundromat, Mannrique said. Eventually, Ramos unlocked the door and fled on foot with the purse.

Police were able to track down the suspect because a surveillance video in the store next to the laundromat captured footage of Ramos using a phone and chatting with a clerk before the robbery occurred.

Ramos was charged with robbery and arraigned on Jan. 7. He's being held at the Cameron County Jail on $75,000 bond.

Man Charged in Theft of Star's Hockey Jersey

TORONTO, Canada (Reuters) - A rising Canadian hockey star's championship red jersey has been recovered in a Quebec mailbox, ending a saga that had reduced the player to tears and sparked outrage and headlines across the country.

Canadian police said on Thursday that Sidney Crosby's jersey, which he had worn during Team Canada's victory at the world junior hockey championships in the United States, would be handed back to the player.

Crosby, 17, is touted as the next Wayne Gretzky, the National Hockey League legend. The jersey went missing from his luggage as he flew to Montreal from the tournament in North Dakota earlier this month.

Crosby said he cried when he discovered the sweater was missing. Players usually keep their game-winning jerseys as souvenirs.

Fan anger and sympathy for Crosby's plight flew across the country last week after the story of the red jersey's disappearance became public, prompting offers of reward from fans for its safe return.

Interest in the junior tournament -- which saw Canada defeat archrival Russia 6-1 in the gold medal game -- was especially keen this year in hockey-mad Canada, which is suffering through an ongoing NHL lockout.

Constable Laurent Gingras of the Montreal police said a 48-year-old man had been charged with theft over C$5,000. Media reports have said the man is an employee at Air Canada.

Hockey Canada, the amateur sport's national governing body, had posted Crosby's white tournament jersey, along with various other team mementos, on an online auction to raise money for charity. Officials removed that jersey from the sale last week to return it to the young player, despite bids reaching C$20,000 ($16,700).
