AT&T May Have Swayed ‘Idol’ Results
BYEDWARD WYATT
Published: May 26, 2009

LOS ANGELES — AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Times Topics: American IdolRepresentatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Since then, angry supporters of Mr. Lambert have flooded online chat boards with messages claiming irregularities in the competition’s voting.

Officials of Fox Broadcasting declined to discuss the situation. In a statement issued Tuesday, a spokesman for AT&T said, “In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

Details of the voting support were first reported last week in an article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.

And the show regularly states that text voting is open only to AT&T subscribers and is subject to normal rates.

I know of one member of Storm2k (looks at D5) who supposedly was "power" texting for Lambert, so like whatever. . .

this is BS. . . there was someone complaining that Allen fans had an unfair advantage because there are supposedly more AT&T subscribers in the South, thus there were more texts were coming for Kris over Adam from Kris' home turf. .. .

Some people take things waaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. I'm glad she has so much passion about the important things in life.

Oh my Lord... that is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. No TV show, including American Idol, is worth getting that upset over.

Michael Johns album was released on June 23rd and it's doing great in sales so far. It's kinda rock/soul and he sounds amazing.

Michael Johns - Hold Back My Heart

It's currently at #40 in the Amazon sales rank, but if you don't count all the Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 stuff selling since his death, he'd be at #11. Absolutely amazing for a new release for an 8th place finisher (although that was way too soon)! Amazing for anyone, really. There are many thousands of albums on Amazon. For instance, Kristy Lee Cook, who finished 7th in the same season, is at #33,180

The "Heart on my Sleeve" MP3 is available for free on Amazon right now. Snatch it while you can... great song! My CD will be here in a few days. Image

When they had this MJ night, I kind of wondered what took them so long. It's kind of ironic that this year they chose to honor his songs and then he passes away.

Okay, so now I'm jamming to "Dancing Machine". :ggreen:

Paula Abdul is likely not coming back as a judge in Season 9... auditions start in 2 1/2 weeks and she still has no contract.

http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/07/ameri ... abdul.html

This would be a huge loss for the show, behind Simon(I'm convinced when he goes the show goes) she brings the most to the show(good or bad, lol). I'd much rather see the pointless Kara go who I find adds nothing at all. At least Paula is entertaining.

I saw this last night and said to Frick the exact same thing. I'd be willing to be there will be a contract and she'll be back, though.

I might be in the minority among those who could do without her on the show. To me she's more of a circus and i wonder how many people turn in just to see how stoned she is that week.

To me, she's a part of the whole "circus". It's been too long for them to go a head a make a change now with the judges. The four of them, Simon, Paula, Randy and Ryan have been a package for the first 7 of those years. I think that too much tinkering starts to smell of desperation on AI's part.

Wow. I thought for sure that she'd be back.

This stinks. I'd much rather see Kara go than Paula.

I only watch during the first couple of weeks, and then maybe at the end. I stopped watching this year when the cute girl with the unnaturally colored red hair was eliminated.

But not renewing Abdul's contract?

I think AI has jumped the shark.
