Lindaloo, according to the Bible, all clergy SHOULD be married..."For if anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God's church?" ( 1 Timothy 3:5).
This was one of the "straws that broke the back" of my former Catholic upbriging (besides the Bishop of Rome declaring primacy and "infallibility in matters of faith"); and led me, many years later, to the Episcopal Church.
Thus it is written...thus it should be done.

I wouldn't sweat it. I love a good debate.

Linda - there's a girl in my oldest's class. She has gone thru PRP/CCD classes since Nina has, since Kindergarten. They're now in the 11th Grade. This girl is a go-getter, to use an old fashioned term, she will not take NO for an answer. She exhausts us, she has so much energy. Anyway, at each PRP summer session, our Pastor would meet with each class and answer any questions they had, for an hour or more. Year after year, Stacy would raise her hand and ask - why can't women be Priests? And Fr. would have to go down that road again. Nina said near the end of their classes, before they made their Confirmations, Fr. would say before the questions started - And Stacy, I'm sorry but right now women can't be Priests. We won't be discussing that today. I always tell Nina you watch she will be a Priest someday. Oh BTW, Stacy is an altar girl. Or was, probably too old now. Anyway, if we saw her on the altar at mass, Nina and I would smile at eachother thinking of what must be going thru Stacy's head then - wishing she could be a Priest!
Not exactly why Priests can't marry but a similar question.
I think they should be permitted to marry. My mom does too - she thinks it would help them relate to married couples better. And what we have to deal with.
Won't happen though.

Seems that "being celebate" has been confused with "being pure" for a long long time. To no one's surprise, all churches and all religions have discovered that there are all kinds of inproprieties that exist among the celebate...many of which are far more demeaning to the cause of their religion than marriage would be.
In fact, it seems to me that there is contradiction in preaching the demand of faithful marriage from a pulpit that disallows it on the basis of purity.

Mary --- my 1st marriage (*makes the sign of the cross and asks for forgiveness before cussing), was performed by a Priest and a Deacon. We had been living together, a sin as far as the Catholic Church is concerned, but requested that our Church marry us. Our Priest refused, but after much coercion, called in a Deacon to co-counsel us, and after Pre-Canna(sp?), the Deacon made his recomendations. The theory behind the Deacon's involvement was that he would be better able to relate to us, and discuss the troubling fact that we were already living together. Things have relaxed a bit in the Catholic Church since then, but my point is, you are right about the ability of a Priest to relate to a married couple. They are clueless unfortunately.
Anyway...my point is that the combination of the Priest and Deacon was magnificant, and I often wonder why this isn't just standard practice in the Catholic church.
