Man steals car, drives it to police station

LAKE HAVASU, Ariz. (Court TV) - Nice car. Wrong driver.

When Rafael Guerro Delira drove up to the Lake Havasu City Police Department in Arizona, officers had a difficult time believing that he was the owner of the brand-new car parked outside the station.

According to the newspaper The Arizona Republic, when Delira approached the officers to make a complaint, they became suspicious when they noticed that the car keys in his hands were new. Delira also looked exhausted and "smelled as if he had not taken a shower for a couple of days."

Police ran a check on the car and determined that it had been stolen a few hours earlier from a car dealership's parking lot.

Delira reportedly confessed to stealing the car and another vehicle from a previous incident. He told investigators that during both thefts, he gained access to the sales office when no one was looking and took random car keys off the wall. He then pressed the keys' alarm buttons to determine which cars matched which keys.

Delira was arrested and charged with theft.

Petite would-be thief caught inside chimney

PLACER, COUNTY, Calif. (Court TV) - At 5'4" and 115 pounds, Jose Francisco Martinez could be considered a small man. But the 19-year-old man may have overestimated his diminutive size during a home burglary in Placer County, Calif.

According to a police document, Martinez targeted a home whose inhabitants were away on vacation. He attempted to break into the residence on April 20, but was unable to gain entry through the doors or windows. He then decided to try his luck with the chimney.

Martinez allegedly climbed a ladder to gain access to the roof, attached a cable to the chimney and then lowered himself down. But the would-be burglar became stuck.

A neighbor passing by heard Martinez's screams and contacted the Placer County Sheriff's Office, the report said. Deputies and members of the fire department dismantled much of the chimney to free Martinez, causing nearly $20,000 worth of damage in the process.

The petite would-be larcenist suffered only minor abrasions and did not require medical attention. He was arrested and charged with residential burglary.

He is being held in the Placer County Jail on $25,000 bond.

'Serial Litterer' Banned From Va. County

BERRYVILLE, Va. (AP) - A West Virginia man branded a "serial litterer" by a prosecutor has been banned from Clarke County for two years for repeatedly driving across the state line and dumping trash.

General District Court Judge Norman deVere Morrison warned Parviz Modaber, 73, that he could go to jail if he violates the order.

"If you're found in Clarke County, bring your toothbrush," Morrison told Modaber in court Wednesday.

Modaber, who has been diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, has repeatedly dumped trash between Virginia 7 and U.S. 340. He has been convicted of littering four times since October 2000.

After his third conviction in May 2003, Modaber was fined $2,500, ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and given a one-year suspended jail sentence. He was convicted of a fourth offense six months later.

"We tried counseling, we tried suspended jail time, we tried large fines. We were sort of at our wits end," prosecutor Suzanne Perka said in a telephone interview Thursday.

Perka said two residents, Robert Smalley and John Crawford, grew weary of finding plastic grocery bags filled with trash along the highway median near their homes and helped authorities track down the litter bug.

"It kept happening and I got madder and madder," Crawford said in an interview. "I'd lay in wait some nights."

A credit card solicitation to "Dear Mr. Modaber" enabled Crawford to track the man down, he said.

Carjack Suspect Reports 'His' Car Stolen

BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) - A suspect takes a car at gunpoint and drives it around for two weeks before the owner spots the car and has it towed. The thief then calls police to report "his" car stolen.

Those events seemed so improbable that Baltimore police detective Gregory Jenkins felt compelled to end his report of the incident with the admonition, "Again, this really happened."

"Another detective told me, 'Greg, you had to make this up,'" the detective told The (Baltimore) Sun.

Police charged Gregory Alston, 20, Tuesday with armed robbery, possession of a stolen car and a handgun violation.

Police say the carjacking occurred about 10:30 p.m. on April 20 when two women reported that a man armed with a silver handgun and wearing a black bandanna approached them while they were parked on a street in northeast Baltimore. The women said the gunman ordered them out of their car and sped off.

Tuesday, one of the women spotted the stolen car in front of an apartment building about a half-mile from where it had been taken.

She called police who towed it to the department's Northeast District station.

Two hours later, a man called police and reported the car stolen.

Officers brought the man back to the station for questioning. At first, police said, he insisted he had bought the car for $1,700 on March 11. Eventually, he confessed to the robbery.

Why did he report it stolen?

The suspect told police he had left his wallet in the car.

Robbery Suspect Caught Through GPS Device

CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) - Police say modern technology foiled an old-fashioned bank robbery. A teller placed an electronic Global Positioning System device in a bag of stolen money, allowing police to track down a suspect in just 42 minutes Thursday.

"Around here (GPS) is still relatively rare," Hamilton County sheriff's office spokesman Steve Barnett said. "But with the advancement in technology and the continued success of catching bank robbers, soon I would hope that other financial institutions would jump on board."

Authorities said that after William Ingram, 46, left a U.S. Bank in suburban Colerain Township, the GPS device tracked him to a car dealership in Hartwell, where he was returning a Honda that he had borrowed for a test drive but actually used as a getaway car.

When Ingram was confronted, money began spilling from his pockets, officials said.

Alleged Burglar Found Asleep in Stolen Car

JEFFERSON, La. (AP) - A suspected burglar who hauled a 30-gallon trash can containing stolen cigarettes from a grocery store was caught after stopping to take a nap, police said.

The man was found fast asleep Monday inside a stolen car, the engine still running, with loot taken from a nearby Winn-Dixie store inside the vehicle, according to the Jefferson Parish sheriff.

The cigarettes were identified by a store manager, according to investigators.

Raymond Shaw, 41, of New Orleans, was booked with simple burglary and two counts of illegal possession of stolen property. He was jailed in lieu of a $30,000 bond.

Ice Cream Vendor Punches Complaining Boy

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (AP) - Throwing a punch at a boy complaining about the cost of his cold treat has landed an ice cream vendor in hot water.

Nazzareno Didiano, 44, was placed on probation and ordered to attend anger management classes after a trial Tuesday over the May 2004 incident.

The boy, now 14, told the judge that Didiano attacked him as he sat on his bike just blocks from an initial confrontation. The boy testified that Didiano pulled him off the bike, punched him in the face and slammed him into a wall.

Didiano acknowledged confronting the boy, but denied punching him. He said the boy had used various obscenities.

"He instigated the whole thing," Didiano said. "I wanted to tell him I didn't appreciate being talked to like that."

Didiano, who was found guilty of simple assault, lost his job with Paul's Ice Cream Co.

Cops: Woman Tries Arson to Evict Daughters

PEARL RIVER, La. (AP) - A woman tried to evict her adult daughters by torching her house after they refused to give her money to buy cocaine, authorities said Tuesday.

Belinda Smith, 47, remained in the parish jail, booked with aggravated arson and aggravated criminal damage, sheriff's office spokesman James Hartman said.

"Belinda Smith admitted trying to burn the house and to assaulting her daughters, arguing the home is hers and she was therefore free to destroy it," he wrote in a news release.

He said deputies answered a disturbance call about 9 a.m. Saturday and found Gail Smith, 21, her 1-year-old daughter, Nevaeh Smith, and Tracie Smith, 19, outside the house.

They told deputies that their mother "had returned home after an all-night drug binge and insisted they give her money to acquire cocaine," Hartman wrote.

When they refused, they said their mother tried to hit them with a board. They ran into another room and called the sheriff's office.

Moments after the deputies began searching the neighborhood for Belinda Smith, her daughters called again. "They said their mother had poured gasoline onto a pile of laundry and attempted to ignite it," Hartman wrote. He said she also allegedly threatened to kill Tracie Smith with an axe handle.

Ky. Man Charged With Drunken Horse Riding

SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) - A man has been charged with drunken driving — for riding a horse while allegedly intoxicated. Millard Greg Dwyer, 42, was arrested Sunday night after he rode his horse onto a downtown street in front of an off-duty state trooper, Somerset Police Lt. Allan Coomer said.

Trooper Martin Wesley told local officers that Dwyer looked like he was about to fall off the horse.

Coomer said Dwyer admitted to being drunk and told officers that he had ridden the horse from Fishing Creek, which was about 5 miles away.

Dwyer told officers that he had consumed about a twelve pack, Coomer said. Dwyer failed sobriety tests, Coomer said, and was charged with operating a vehicle other than a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants.

A breath test showed Dwyer's alcohol level at .244, more than three times the limit, Coomer said.

Dwyer was released from the Pulaski County Dentention Center Monday, jail officials said. He faces a fine of between $20-$100, plus court costs, Coomer said.

Coomer said the arrest was "very unusual," but Somerset police have arrested others for similar violations, such as riding a bicycle and a lawn mower under the influence.

Okla. Burglar Leaves ID Near Hot Tub

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Police have a good lead to the identity of a burglar who broke into a home, ate a meal, soaked in a hot tub and stole $4,000 worth of tools. A driver's license was found near the hot tub.

Resident Nathan Sassamon said he feels violated.

"It's not a pleasant feeling to know someone has been in your home, especially when you see these people made themselves comfortable."

Police still are searching for the 27-year-old man whose identification they found.

Sossamon thinks the burglar may be acquainted with him through a co-worker and knew he would be away from home. Sossamon said he was out of town over the weekend and returned home Sunday to find that an air compressor, eight tool boxes, a television and a stereo system were missing. Several other items had been taken, and dirty dishes were left in the kitchen.

Sossamon said his home was locked but the burglar apparently got in through a dog door in the garage and pried a door to get into the house.

N.M. Man Arrested for DUI for 20th Time

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A man has been arrested for driving drunk for the 20th time, according to state Motor Vehicle Department records.

Joseph Rodarte, 47, was stopped Monday by Isleta Pueblo police for driving with a cracked headlight. Police discovered he didn't have a valid driver's license or insurance and the registration on the car he was driving had expired in 1993.

Rodarte apparently hasn't had a valid driver's license for at least 18 years, motor vehicle records show.

When police approached Rodarte on Monday, an officer immediately smelled alcohol on his breath. Rodarte refused to take a test and was arrested on aggravated DWI. Bond was set at $50,000.

It was his 18th arrest on drunken driving charges since 1985. Since then, he has been convicted seven times, paid $750 in fines and been sentenced to a total of 1,081 days in jail.

"This is extremely frustrating. It makes us look like idiots," said Linda Atkinson, executive director of the DWI Resource Center in Albuquerque. "We just can't get the message across. From his history, he knows nothing serious is going to happen to him."

Rodarte and his family could not be reached for comment.

His most recent conviction occurred in 2000, and court records show he was sentenced to 316 days in jail. At the time, the maximum sentence he faced was 18 months' imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.

If convicted in Monday's arrest, Rodarte faces a maximum three-year prison term.

According to state records, Rodarte's first DWI arrest came in 1980 when he was 21. By age 30, he had been arrested seven times for DWI. Between 1990 and 1999, he was arrested 11 times, records show.

Five arrests were dismissed, and the disposition of seven other cases is unknown.

Rodarte also has been arrested on charges of driving with a revoked or suspended license, aggravated assault, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, negligent use of firearms, concealing identity, harassment, false imprisonment and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Cops: Couple Use Forged Check to Buy Home

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - An Arizona couple has been charged with grand theft, accused of trying to buy a home using a forged cashier's check. Kathy Lynn Jean, 42, and Robby Joe Jean, 39, moved furniture into the new home before they were arrested Tuesday, Boise police Detective Wade Spain said.

Both are charged with grand theft; Kathy Jean is also charged with forgery and violating federal probation.

"It's just totally odd," Spain said. "I guess they thought they were smooth talkers and could get away with it."

Police claim the couple bought a legitimate cashier's check worth $37.06 at a Boise bank, but then altered it so it appeared to be a check for $317,000.

They are accused of giving the altered check to a title company after business hours on Monday as a cash payment for the Meridian home.

"The title company was instantly suspicious and went to the bank the first thing in the morning," Spain said.

The couple are awaiting hearings in 4th District Magistrate Court.

Man accused of confronting irritated driver with sword

NASHUA, N.H. (Court TV) - Charles O'Neill may be a slow driver, but he was quick to defend his driving skills against another irritated driver on May 1.

The New Hampshire man was allegedly driving slowly on a highway when another driver honked at him and pulled in front of his vehicle, according to Lieutenant Andrew Lavoie of the Nashua Police Department.

When the second driver stopped at a red light, O'Neill pulled alongside him and exited his vehicle. The two men exchanged words, and O'Neill allegedly returned to his vehicle, retrieved a sheath, and then pulled out a sword with a three-foot-long blade.

He then told the other driver, "I ought to run you through with this."

Lavoie said the other driver retreated from O'Neill, who punctured one of the man's tires before driving away. The second man took down O'Neill's license plate number and contacted police.

Police located O'Neill, who was charged with criminal threatening and mischief. He was released on $2000 bail and will be arraigned at a later date.

Parrot risks life, feathers for owner during roommate fight

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Court TV) - Why get a guard dog when you have Mango the parrot?

When Mango's owner, Joe Quirarpe, became involved in a dispute with a housemate on May 2, the pigeon-sized Brazilian parrot risked life and feathers to defend its owner.

San Mateo County Lieutenant Lisa Williams said Grady Powless, a roommate of Quirarpe's, had been drinking and got into an argument with the other man around 5:50 p.m. Powless, 47, allegedly kicked Quirarpe in the legs and then hit him with the lid of a barbecue grill.

Michael Monaghan, a third roommate who tried to intervene in the dispute, told the San Mateo Daily Journal that Mango swooped down into the fracas when it saw its owner being attacked.

Powless allegedly grabbed the bird and began ripping out its tail feathers. He then threw the bird to the ground and attempted to stomp on it.

According to Lt. Williams, Monaghan grabbed Mango and ran back into the house. When deputies arrived, they placed Powless under arrest. Mango was not seriously hurt.

"The bird was startled," Williams said. "But it looked like it was going to be okay."

Powless was charged with vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals, and attempt to commit a felony. He's being held on $100,000 bond at the Redwood City County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 16th.

Carjacker loses car, reports it stolen

BALTIMORE, Maryland (Court TV) - Gregory Alston must have been suffering from temporary memory loss when he contacted Baltimore police to report his white Nissan Maxima stolen. He forgot to mention that he had stolen the car from someone else.

According to Detective Gregory Jenkins, Alston, 20, seized the vehicle at gunpoint from two women around 10:30 p.m. on April 20. Police were unable to investigate the theft because the victims had borrowed the car from a friend and could not recall the temporary license plate number.

But two weeks later, one of the women spotted the car parked in front of Alston's apartment building, about a half-mile away from where the carjacking incident had occurred. She contacted police, who towed the vehicle away to the local precinct.

Detective Jenkins said he was in the process of contacting the car's rightful owner when Alston called the precinct to report that "his" car had been stolen. Officers brought the unsuspecting carjacker in for questioning.

"We treated him like a victim," Jenkins said. "And he was absolutely sincere."

However, Alston ran into trouble when the vehicle's owner appeared at the precinct with proof of ownership. He told detectives that he had purchased the car from a friend, but then was unable to provide details or names to confirm the sale. He later admitted to the theft and said that he had reported the car stolen because he left his wallet inside the vehicle and wanted to get it back.

Alston was charged with armed robbery, possession of a stolen car and a handgun violation.

Trooper: DUI Suspect Tried to Hit on Me

WOODVILLE, Maine (AP) - A state trooper says she's baffled by the behavior of a suspect who displayed amorous intentions as she was taking him into custody for getting into a car accident and failing three roadside sobriety tests.

"What did he think I was going to do? Go out on a date with him?" asked Trooper Jennifer Fiske, who arrested Peter Bradley Murray early Sunday morning on Route 116.

Murray, 42, allegedly began behaving inappropriately while seated beside Fiske in the front passenger seat of her cruiser, which has no cage separating front and back seats.

"Then he said, 'You have beautiful green eyes,' and he started touching my arm," Fiske said. "I'd had enough of that."

Fiske got out of the car and went around to the passenger seat to handcuff Murray. She said he tried to cuff himself to her, saying, "I just want us to be tied together."

Fiske responded by giving a sudden short twist to the handcuff and rapping him on the thigh with her police baton. She said he later tried to grab for the steering wheel, forcing additional smacks.

Murray was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, assault on a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest, and refusing to sign or give a name.

Cops: Woman Uses Ex's Credit Card for Hit

OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - A 25-year-old woman was charged with trying to hire a man to kill her ex-husband, and police say she used one of his credit cards to pay for the would-be hit man's flight from Australia.

Police Capt. Michael Dehm said it was a report of an unauthorized $2,824 credit card charge from the ex-husband that led authorities to Terra L. Endres, 25.

Endres was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree criminal solicitation and first-degree identity theft, both felonies. She was being held in the Oswego County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Keith Costello said he and Endres were married in 1999 and divorced in 2002. The couple had two children, who are now in Costello's custody.

Dehm said he did not know how Endres and the man from Australia became acquainted, but that the two had been communicating by phone and the Internet for months.

Oswego Police worked with the FBI on the case. The man from Australia was detained when he arrived in Los Angeles. Authorities declined to name the man, saying their investigation was continuing.

Drunken man calls police to help locate him

HILLTOWN, Penn. (Court TV) - When Ronald Pedigree woke up in an unfamiliar bed and called police to help get his bearings, he didn't expect that it would lead to his arrest.

Police in Hilltown, Penn., charged the 43-year-old roofer with criminal trespass, public drunkenness and criminal mischief after he allegedly broke into a camper to sleep off a night of drinking.

Hilltown Police Chief Chris Englehart said Pedigree's sobriety troubles started early in the evening of April 7 with a DUI arrest after Pedigree's car hit another in the parking lot of a supermarket. Pedigree refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test and was taken to the police station. He was charged with driving under the influence and released around 10 p.m. into a friend's custody.

On the way home, Pedigree got into a dispute with the friend. He voluntarily left the car and began walking on foot.

"I don't believe he knew where he was going," Englehart said. "But he decided to stop at one of the homes and knocked on the door."

When the residents responded, Pedigree offered to fix their driveway. The couple refused and assumed that Pedigree would leave. They were unaware that he later broke into the camper parked in their driveway and settled in for the night.

Pedigree woke up the next morning and was unable to identify his surroundings. He used his cellphone to contact police for help.

Englehart said Pedigree could not tell officers at the scene how he ended up in the camper. After the homeowners identified him from the previous night, officers determined that Pedigree had broken into the vehicle.

Pedigree was arrested and charged a second time. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 3.
