Russia thumbs its nose into this standoff:

REUTERS Any military attack on Iran would have a "catastrophic" effect on the Middle East, a Russian foreign ministry official said Wednesday after reports that Israel might launch such an attack.
"All this is very dangerous. If force is used it will be catastrophic for the whole Middle East," the official told journalists on condition of anonymity.

The official also said Iran was "ready to look seriously at proposals" presented on June 14 by six world powers aimed at getting the Islamic republic to suspend uranium enrichment. He called Iran's attitude a "positive signal."

The comments came after US media reported on June 20 that Israeli jet pilots had trained for a possible strike on Iranian nuclear sites.

Western powers fear Russia is developing a nuclear weapons programme under cover of its stated aim of developing civilian nuclear energy. However Tehran denies such claims.

Russia, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has a section of border close to northern Iran in the Caucasus mountains and has been cautious about Western efforts to punish Iran over its nuclear activities.

error on the article

It should say Iran is developing weapons, not Russia

Iran has test-fired what it called a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which is capable of reaching its main regional enemy Israel, state media say.

The missile, said to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles), was one of nine launched from a remote desert site.

Iran has tested the Shahab-3 before, but the latest launch comes amid rising tensions with the US and Israel over the country's nuclear programme.

The US denounced the test and called on Iran to abandon its missile programme.

Iran should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

Not a good development.

Keeping tensions high keeps oil prices up, which helps Iran. Russia, as well, which may be why they are content to let this crisis continue.

They got nervous when the price of oil started plunging yesterday.

Yep, it's a bubble all right. Now the key players are staging events to try to keep the price up a little bit longer.

Iran does get rewarded with higher prices each time they do something to ratchet up the tensions.

You know what you do when a brat throws things and screams? You walk out the door in leave it to find out on its own how stupid "it is", meaning you pay no attion to the brat, intill it finally comes to the conclusion that it is losing a lot and acting stupid at doing so.

This is what we should do, we should warn Iran that if they fire a nuclear weapon, that their country will be wiped off the face of the earth. I mean the U.S.should come out in say it in clear terms...Then we should pop a cold one, and go on with our lifes, not saying another word to Iran. Iran is that brat in should be lefted out of all world activity's intil they grow up.

NO MORE, and NO LESS. Let the president of Iran think twice before he doe's anything, and lets see if he finally comes to his senses.

Easy as pie and problem solved.

Sure, let's put our energy crisis into overdrive. Good idea.

The best way to deal with these people is to wean ourselves off oil and let them fester in the 7th century hell they wish to live in.

What ever!

Anything less then going 80 percent nuclear is spitting in the wind. In then maybe hybrid cars, but still how are you going to power them if you don't have a good power source, that is also why we should go to nuclear. As for Iran we should do no less then what I stated...

I'm saying that the only way economic for us is nuclear power. Also I'm saying that Iran needs to know that we will hit them hard if they attack.

Nevermind that in the meantime you plunge the entire world into a massive economic depression. It's worth it to show Iran who's in charge.

I'm not saying do it, but let Iran know that if they fire off a bomb that they won't survive. What would you do if Iran was seriously going to use a nuke? As for going nuclear for our cities; france gets 80 percent of their power from that, so it is very effective.

Also the world is going to go into a depression no matter if we allow Iran to use the bomb and we do nothing, which will be worst because Iran will use it to gain a lot of power, or we hitting back to stop it from going out of hand any more.

Iran is looking for a response. They're trying to prop up oil prices. By responding, we are only playing their game and letting them pull the strings. The smarter move is to publicly ignore them and let Israel deal with them.
