Details

This was so close to a disaster today…

Here’s a video of a Lufthansa A320 ripping off its left winglet on the runway at Hamburg earlier today in an aborted crosswind landing.

And here’s a photo of the wing strike.

The A320 has a crosswind landing limit of 33 kts gusting 38 kts

According to the data at the time, the wind was 35kts, gusting 55 kts.

Wow, had that wing been on the ground a second longer, it is possible the plane would of ended up cart wheeling across the runway.

I give A LOT of credit to that pilot! My heart was in my throat watching it trying to land sideways.

looks like a pretty tough cross wind landing. However, these landings occur everyday and are not that uncommon. If you read the story he was successful at landing the plane on the 2nd attempt. Pilots are trained to handle cross wind landings, however an unexpected gust of wind at touchdown can throw a wrench into the situation. Kudos to the pilot for getting it back up into the air and then getting it safely on the ground.

TO see more cross wind landings just go to youtube and search for them. There are some amazing ones!!

It is not a matter of whether it is done every day or not, the winds were well above the safety criteria for that particular aircraft...they should of landed somewhere else.
