...outside my front door that; for some reason, always seems to lose its potting soil. And I cannot figure out why. I would show you a picture or two but my digital camera died. Any ideas?

What Lindaloo said is true....put some mothballs out around
the plant and see what happens....

We also have possum problems in my backyard from time to time; that I amssume is why my seeds croaked. As for my front yard plant, the pot has never tipped over (yet); but I will keep an eye on it and follow these tips. :)

The mothballs really do work. Believe it or not I even put them around the cars to keep the cats off of them. lol.

With any outdoor container I would also try some mulch on top. This will help retain the moisture and soil. In addition to creatures the wind can blow the loose soil out and when watering loose soil can splash or float out. They make mosses and bark, but if the container is large some colorful pearock would work as well.
