I recall an issue about whether people of Spanish ancestry were Hispanic, about a decade ago, as relating to whether a cop or firefighter in San Francisco fit the quota that city has on promotions, but that isn't the real issue.


Weren't the Seminoles already there when the conquistadores arrived?

A Spanish or Spaniard discovered Florida. Which is a nonsense since there were Native Americans here. Which means that it was already discovered when Ponce de León landed in 1565.

Getting back to SF case form about a decade ago as to whether the Spanish are Hispanic, couldn't find the specific case, but in 1973, Judge Robert Peckham of the 9th Circuit Court ordered the SFPD to stop using exams for promotion of police officers, and base promotions strictly on ethnic and gender quotas. At the time, the SFPD was 85% white and 95% male.

Judge Charlie Legge, who replaced Peckham after his death, lifted the 9th Circuits oversight in 1994, with the SFPD at 85% male and 63% white. The city hadn't met the court's order of 45% non-white officers, but the judge agreed the city was making progress.

IIRC from school, the first European to visit Texas had the unfortunate family name of Cabeza de Baca.

Techinally, yes, Hispanics did discover Florida. From Wikipedia:

The term is now confined to refer to the culture and people of Spain plus the Spanish-speaking countries of Hispanic America. Additionally, countries or regions with a historical legacy from Spain, including the Southwestern United States and Florida; the African nations of Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara and the Northern coastal region of Morocco; the Asia-Pacific nations of the Philippines, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands; may be considered to be a part of the Hispanosphere.

But for US Census purposes:

During the 1970s, the United States Government defined the term "Hispanic" to identify Latin American individuals, and their descendants, living in the U.S. regardless of race.[6]

So, it's a bit of a paradox, I quess . . technically, ifthe firefighter's family came directly from Spain, technically he is classed as Causcian (ie came from Europe) and technically he could qualify as a Hispanic. Semantics, I guess. The difference though between European Hispanics and Latin American Hispanics, is that a lot of the Latin American Hispanics are of "mestizo" (mixed European and Native American) heritage.

Sure, the Hispanics discovered Florida. And, as soon and they met the inhabitents, they called them Indians.

According to history, when Colombus arrived to the Bahamas he though or wanted to believe he was in the East Indies, and therefore, called the natives, indians.

Anyone else ever notice how "key limes" look very similar to Egyptian limes? Yup they have those over in Mexico as well..

I had no idea. Do they taste the same too? I thought key limes were unique to the Keys.
