I had to sleep on one two nights ago! Yes our youngest is going off to college in Sept. We just had a 2 day pre-college orientation that went very well. We all decided to stay in dorms. The overnight reminded me of religious retreats....LOL The accommodations I mean......anyway, when her older sister went off to college we bought an extra long twin mattress pad. But it was basic and I mean bare bones basic. This time I know I have to somehow make this bed more comfortable to sleep on. It's also covered in blue plastic. I'm sure it's to keep the mattress dry and bug free. But it makes for a not so comfortable night's sleep.

We found mattress pads at Target. Again, they are basic. Not much padding. I recall we put two mattress pads on her sister's dorm bed. That was her sister's idea. It must have helped add more padding, they are inexpensive - $7 each.

But now I wonder if we need more. Would this work or is this product just another dorm-section gimmick?

Call one of your local upholstery shops and see if they might have foam they could cut for you?

Mary, what about a feather bed to put on top of the mattress? I bought an orthopeadic mattress on my doctor's advice and it was so firm I couldn't sleep, so I bought a feather bed and it is SOOOOO comfortable!!!!

MomH - that's a great idea. I could also think about feather bed toppers, as you've purchased sunny. That's the link I provided above (at least I think it's a similar product to what you purchased). sunny - do you have any trouble with the feather bed shifting or bunging up as you sleep?

The link is similar to what I had before I purchased the feather bed. The topper just wasn't enough!!! I got mine at JC Penney. A friend of mine, Shelby, got one from QVC, it's from the Northern Nights collection and that will be the next one I get That thing is just pure heaven! If you do decide to go with a feather bed, just buy the 'deep pocket sheets' to put on top of it, that will/should keep it from shifting.

I just stumbled upon one for a regular twin size at Penney's, I'd love to treat my other daughter's twin bed to that mattress pad/topper, the ratings were excellent. But it doesn't come in XL Twin though. This twin bed we own goes back and forth - between home and an apt. on campus for her use.

Couldn't find much at Penney's for XL Twin. Target seems to have a lot, as does Bed Bath & Beyond. They seem to have the dorm section covered.

I think I'm going to buy that one from Target anyway - it's only $30, can't beat that.

When you opt to sleep on one of these dorm mattresses, you realize how uncomfortable they are! It was so nice to get home and to our waterbed. Yes we still have a waterbed....love it! LOL

Update.....I had to run an errand to Target, so I looked at their XL Twin fiberbed. I wasn't that impressed with it. Then I thought I'd better pick up the basic XL Twin mattress pad - wrong. They're all gone - I wonder why? LOL Yes I am sometimes such a procrastinator....

Anyway, I put in more time searching online, between Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond they seem to have the dorm bedding dept. covered.

I settled on two items from BB & B - a better XL Twin mattress pad than a basic one. At $20, instead of $7 at Target (but they're out of stock now anyway). And a better fiberbed than the Target one (online or instore). It was $40, instead of $30 at Target. Only difference was Target has the corner straps and the BB & B one didn't come with them.

Either way, I think our daughter will have a comfy bed when I'm done with it! Here are the two items I ordered:

Thanks for your help everyone......we looked at her specific room online and like it. She's in a double, with a dormer window, overlooking a courtyard.

It's all starting to come together now......sniff, sniff. I'm trying not to cry here!
