The ACLU is right. I like some of his things like wearing pink underwear, but some of the things he's done is simply blatant disregard for the law.

His treatment of pretrial detainees is a clear violation of due process and I am a strict constitutionalist, so he gets no points from me.

Even if you like it, it's still illegal.

Good job ACLU. Just because they are criminals doesn't give Joe the Sheriff the right to ignore the 8th amendment.

I'm glad the courts came down on his treatment of pre-trail inmates too a few years ago.

There is nothing unusual about his punishment of criminals. The punishment is the same for each and every criminal

And assignment to tent city is voluntary. Inmates get a little time off their sentences for going there.

I see nothing inhumane about the way he runs his jails. If they are dirty well the inmates can be assigned to cleaning duties. If the inmates dont like the way Arpaio runs his jails they can stop breaking the law. There are Americans who committed no crimes who are living under much harsher conditions than are experienced in one of the Maricopa County lockups.

As a resident of Maricopa County, I hear a lot about Sheriff Joe. People love him or hate him, and there is little gray area in between.

The same goes for how he views his job. You either follow the law or face the consequences.

I'm sure there will be some improvement in conditions brought about by the recent order, but the sheriff's focus is on carrying out his job. He and his methods may definitely be in question, but there are a lot of people who respect him for the hard position he takes.

And that includes a lot of those who spend time in his jails.

I suspect he (a Republican) will be re-elected on November 4th even if Maricopa County may not do the same for our own John McCain in the Presidential election.

Even if McCain wins Maricopa County, Pima County will have massive fraud and go Dem like it did for Napolitano in 2002.

I LOVE Sheriff Joe, just think, if the rest of the country would jump on the Joe wagon and start treating their dips sticks like Joes does, then maybe we'd see a drop in crime nationwide!

We need more Sheriff Joe's. The 8th Amendment says cruel and unusual punishment, not cruel or unusual punishment. Wearing pink underwear is unusual, but not cruel, so that is fine. Also, there is equal protection clause issue and it applies to everyone, so it's legal too. While, we're at it, we can send Fred Phelps and wackos to Sheriff Joe's jails.

Last I saw last night Sheriff Joe was leading with 64% of the votes.

That pisses me off because we then have to pay the medical care that inevitably results. There are also prisons that stick inmates in cells with inmates who have AIDS, where they will probably be violated. Who has the right to decide these things should be real-life Oz's? I am all for giving them bare-minimum accommodations, but this guy needs someone to reign him in. The Stanford prison experiment and Abu Gharib both proved that anyone can become really bad people.

agree 100%, life in prison should be a living hell, crappy beds, lousy food, etc. Our tax money shouldn't be going to pampering them.

Of course none of these inmates might be innocent of their crimes.....

If you're a "pre-trial detainee" then you've been accused and arrested and can't afford to bail yourself out or to hire a lawyer to get a PR bond for you until the trial date. That's it.

Our justice system, while it's the best in the world, is far from perfect. Open your eyes a bit before saying such harsh things about your fellow man. You don't know when or to whom these situations might arise.
