Black Friday

Do you get up before dawn to hit the sales?

Here's a link to Black Friday ads.

I have gone a few times in the past. It can be dangerous. :P
I haven't had time to scour the ads, but I seriously doubt there will be anything worth fighting losing sleep and fighting those crowds. I may go later in the day, though, for some of the all day or 2 day specials. Target, for instance, will give rainchecks.

I have done quite well online as well.

I'm not mad at the person who posted this topic, but, the term is stupid - I always thought that term referred to the US stock market crash of '29:

Well, I would hope you're not mad at me for posting this topic.Image
I didn't make up the term and it's widely known as the day after Thanksgiving.

No, no, I'm not mad at you for posting the topic ('specially since you're the boss), but, just mad at the media for associating that term with Thanksgiving - isn't Halloween enough for them?

Black Tuesday is the phrase for the stockmarket crash.

As for calling the day after Thanksgiving black friday, i don't have a problem with that. It's encouraging that a company would be in the black instead of the red. Plus black friday is the start of the Christmas season.

The best deals come right after Christmas. That's when I shop.

The October 1929 market crash was not limited to one day. It was a series of traumatic sell offs over a six day period.

The term "Black Friday" is used worldwide to describe events that happened on Fridays.

Here in the U.S. it generally describes the day after Thanksgiving when retailers go from operating in the "red" to being in the "black" in terms of operating expenses.

CNN quick vote online has recorded 68% of folks saying they are in a "spending lock down" this season. Only 10% say they will spend as much as last year. Doesn't look like a good season for the retailers.

This year Kmart had the best deals for me. My local Kmart was out of stock on the items I wanted and the free shipping on their web site was not working for some reason. By the time they got the free shipping thing fixed a comforter and electric blanket in my order went out of stock and were removed from my cart! I did run over to the Kmart across the street yesterday and by a nice towel though.

As a general rule I never shop on Black Friday. Years ago I had an medical office job and we were told upon our hiring we could never ask off for that day. Never. I used to wonder if the employees that called in sick were really sick.....LOL Anyway, I just decided early on that I'd steer clear of this date. Then I went back to school and enrolled in college so I had no money to shop. Then I remarried and had a few babies. I couldn't shop with babies! LOL My husband always works this date too......so long story short, for over 30 years now I've never really had a good reason to shop on this date.

Until now.

I am surprised there wasn't a request or movement afoot, encouraging everyone to shop for at least one item today. To help jumpstart the economy?

I must admit I feel somewhat obligated to buy ~something~ today........to do my part.

But then our budget is stretched to tight, the other part of me cannot justify buying anything more than the 6 people on our list this year. Yes our xmas gift list this year is way-way down.

Anyway, in wordy way, no I've never shopped on this date but feel compelled to do so this year. Even if it's one thing, for myself!

LOL!!!

We did buy a new boat this past Spring - does that count?

No, we're keeping our cars right now, 3 with over 90,000 miles on them, each of them too, one has 160,000! Hanging, hanging onto them as long as we can!

But it would be cool to have a new hybrid or something with killer gas mileage (I shouldn't complain though we have 2 Civics, one has the smallest engine and both have manuals, and get over 30 MPG)......

This is just horrible!! It's just *stuff*
A person is forever dead.

Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old employee, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available pending results of an autopsy.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said. Early witness accounts that the woman suffered a miscarriage were unfounded, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Wal-Mart spokesman Dave Tovar called the incident a "tragic situation."

"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," Tovar said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time."

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

The Culture of Death strikes again - when will people learn that we are doomed for destruction, as a country and society, if we continue down the present path...

When a society places the purchase of a thing before the safety of a human life, we have no future...

There was no excuse for what happened - none - they were not trying to escape gunfire outside the store, or, a tornado, or, were not trying to escape the store due to a fire...

Their only reason to trample a person to death, was to be first in line to buy their next piece of needless electronic junk at a sale price...

May God have mercy on the man who was killed - and on those who killed him...

The "culture of death" theory is interesting.....how many species have come and gone? And we as Homo sapiens thinking we'll live forever! Research the Gaea theory. The Earth is a living organism within itself. All the answers are right here on this planet.
