The good news is that pounding surf, tides, and weather will gradually return this area to normal. It will take time, and they need to shut off the oil gusher first. But it will not be permanent.

While I couldn't disagree with you more.......it's nice to see some optimism.

You can still to this day turn rocks over in Prince William Sound and see crude remaining from the Exxon Valdez. That's 21 years. I'm 58 and won't be around much longer.......so for some of us this is quite permanent.

I have spent a lot of time on, in, and near the Chandeleur Islands in my 50+ years. They have taken a beating over just my lifetime, and it is surely sad to see what is happening. First it was the storms - Georges, Ivan, Katrina, and countless lesser storms that washed much of the islands away or into different islands. Now this - the worst that could ever happen!!

Islands can recover from storms and tides, but oil is a long term visitor that won't be easily removed, if ever. Chandeleur, Breton Sound, and the barrier islands of MS, AL, & FL are all in for a rude awakening..... The end result of this "spill" will be the demise of many species - fish and birds alike. Not to mention the impact on shrimp, oysters, and many many others. And, certainly, Chandeleur has a LOT to do with the birth and growth of all these animals. Sad indeed......
