Many of you may not be aware of why poor folks (often blacks) were often located on one side of the RR tracks and wealthier people (often whites) were on the other side of the tracks in the South. The reason has to do with the prevailing wind direction down south - out of the south. In the old days, trains were powered by wood and coal. The thick black smoke was driven northward by the prevailing winds, making the north side of the tracks less desirable - and a cheaper area to live. That's why the poor generally live north of the RR tracks down south.
