Rush Limbaugh issued the following statement on his radio program Friday:

Rush wrote:"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life. So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication.

"I first started taking prescription painkillers some years ago when my doctor prescribed them to treat post surgical pain following spinal surgery.

"Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful and I continued to have severe pain in my lower back and also in my neck due to herniated discs. I am still experiencing that pain. Rather than opt for additional surgery for these conditions, I chose to treat the pain with prescribed medication. This medication turned out to be highly addictive.

"Over the past several years I have tried to break my dependence on pain pills and, in fact, twice checked myself into medical facilities in an attempt to do so. I have recently agreed with my physician about the next steps.

"Immediately following this broadcast, I am checking myself into a treatment center for the next 30 days to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me. The show will continue during this time, of course, with an array of guest hosts you have come to know and respect.

"I am not making any excuses. You know, over the years athletes and celebrities have emerged from treatment centers to great fanfare and praise for conquering great demons. They are said to be great role models and examples for others. Well, I am no role model. I refuse to let anyone think I am doing something great here, when there are people you never hear about, who face long odds and never resort to such escapes. They are the role models. I am no victim and do not portray myself as such. I take full responsibility for my problem.

"At the present time, the authorities are conducting an investigation, and I have been asked to limit my public comments until this investigation is complete.

"So I will only say that the stories you have read and heard contain inaccuracies and distortions, which I will clear up when I am free to speak about them.

"I deeply appreciate all your support over this last tumultuous week. It has sustained me. I ask now for your prayers. I look forward to resuming our excursion into broadcast excellence together."

Well, he headed it off at the pass. It's good that he admitted that he has a problem and hopefully he'll be able to kick this addiction through rehab.

Rush handled this with class, dignity, and as always (as he preaches) accepts full responsibility for his actions, and blames nobody but himself.

Addiction to Prescription drugs is a much larger problem than many people realize. As I've said before, being addicted to prescription medicine, does not make a person void of character or integrity. My 78 year old Mother-in-Law went into Geriatric Ward for the very same problem. Years and years of prescription after prescription written with little to no regard to the ensuing addiction. An addiction to Pain killers will produce a most severe, migrane quality headache with just a single dose missed. You, me, or the girl next door can easily become addicted to these drugs, especially if the operations to relieve pain, do not work as intended.

Judging by his statement, the allegations of illegal use are as expected, distorted and full of in-accuracies.

It will be a month before I listen to his show again, because there is no substitute.

No one can criticize because we all have one addiction or another. I stayed at my in-laws for a few days and they drank nothing but decaf soda and coffee. In 2 days I had a splitting headache and had to sneak off to a convenience store for a fix. I wish him all the best.

First of all.. I hope he gets the help he needs. Second..Didn't this come out due to an investigation..ie illegal activity??? Third and lastly..he has no right to ever criticize anyone again..for being addicted to anything..if he does he's a hippocrate  and there should be no double standards  I wish him all the luck in the world... He will be in my prayers

It all depends on the circumstances to be deemed "illegal activity" I have a very good friend who was the coroner here who had an addiction to the painkiller Lortab. He never did anything illegal because the doctor kept prescribing them to him. He admitted he had a problem, checked himself into rehab and kicked it. Does this mean he is a bad person? Indeed not!!

I agree Lindaloo.. I was just hearing that this addiction came to like after a crimminal investigation.. I dunno how much is true. I just heard him and his maid obtained the pills illegally..could be a lie

I wish him the best. Addictions can happen to anyone. While I am not a fan of Rush I do wish him success in his recovery. :)

Most of all he's getting help - admitting you have a problem and getting help is the first steps.

I don't particular like him - that's my opinion - but I wish him well and a speedy recovery for his fans out there.

Poor Rush....I wish him well too. This is one area of drug addiction that's difficult to detect. I got quite used to taking Percoset's, every 4 hours, right after my hospital discharge for my first colon surgery. That is what the nurse told me to do, not to let them lapse. Well, that script was running out and you can't just phone in a refill. You need the actual Rx......my doctor wanted me on another pain medication, less adicting. All the while I was so sick b/c I was used to taking Percoset's. This was after having Morphine in an IV drip for a few days, then Demerol, then Percoset's. Yes I was a mess there for a bit.....LOL Thing was my husband kept telling me to let the meds lapse, take them only when I had pain so severe I couldn't stand it. I was in horrendous pain, BTW. It took about 2 weeks for my body to really get used to just relying on Tylenol. So my gosh I can see how patients get hooked on this stuff. Sure feel for Rush. At least he's getting the help he needs now.

If any good can come out of this sad situation for Rush, maybe it will be that the people who blindly follow him and say ditto to every word he utters will see that he is only a man with faults like everyone else, and maybe they will begin to think for themselves again!

I listen to Rush but I don't "blindly follow" him...lol. I agree with a lot of what he says and that's where the phrase "dittohead" came from. I'm quite aware that he is just a man with faults like everyone else as he is aware of that too. We just happen to agree on many issues and he is much better at expressing those opinions and making points than I am. That's why he's the one with the popular radio show and not me. ;)

By the way, I know a lot of people who listen to Rush, and we all think for ourselves. 8-)

Anyway, I wish Rush the best in his recovery and I'll be praying for him. I've seen people fight addictions before and it's not easy.....he needs a lot of prayers.

I know some who don't believe a word anyone but Rush says. I don't understand why people feel the way they do about him, especially now that we see the hyprocrisy.

You are right Rainband... if this turns out to be true then the maid and Rush need to be brought up on charges. She is kind of an idiot because she is just as guilty. What people will do for that five minutes of fame huh? lol.

They both should be brought up on charges if he obtained thae drugs illegally, no question.

I do hope that he will become more empathetic towards those that are addicted to drugs, legal or illegal. The feeling and the emotional pain are both the same. It all depends upon who enables you.
