Vice President Dick Cheney today said terrorists are "doing everything they can" to get weapons of mass destruction that could kill hundreds of thousands of Americans "in a single day of horror." His comments came in the latest in a series of speeches top administration officials are giving in hopes of curbing criticism over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

I thought the single day of horror was Halloween, when little people dressed in scary costumes terrorized the neighborhoods?

But seriously, I hope this will not happen. :o

And we are doing everything we can to stop them...I believe. :)

Sometimes I wonder though -- are there days when our guys in Homeland Security intercept a serious threat, but we, the people, don't hear about it because some people are afraid that "Big Brother" will be watching us and taking away our civil rights or others might fear that hate crime against Muslims (or those that look Muslim) will be on the rise if we learn of another attack (or intercepted attack)? Or it could be that the less we know right now, the better, because we don't need to know how they were caught. Maybe if we knew all the details, it would aid the enemy and they'd know how to avoid detection next time. So, our guys are staying quiet for now.

I don't know. It bugs me to a degree to feel left in the dark like this. Just hearing warnings every once in a while like "They're planning something big" or "We're hearing more chatter and so we're raising the alert status again."

I guess all I can do is keep my eyes open and my mind alert. And wait.

I agree fully with you here Duck!!! I know we are supposed to go on and live oour lives like nothing is wrong, but to me SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG when a high government official makes a statement like that and we are left completely in the DARK about what may be going on!!! How are we supposed to be vigilant and more careful if we have no idea what to watch for? And they are talking about or are laying off screeners at our airports??? Doesn't make me feel real secure!!!

We've already had a single day. Not that another one couldn't happen and yes, someone has/is making/will be making WMD's. Let's just make sure we are alittle more certain of who has them and where they are.

Are we doing everything we can to ensure that we find Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden?

I guess it's time for our monthly dose of false fear and panic. Way to go Dick. Come on, we've been through this before. A "single day of horror"?? This is just another vagued-up terrorist "threat" that the government keeps giving us.

...and if something happens tomorrow there will be postings on this board saying "why didn't they warn us." People said that after 9/11. Frankly I'd rather here the cry of the wolf and be reminded to be vigilant.

First... I believe the govt. is doing everything they can to prevent this from happening. My problem with this is... Cheney said this in a "series of speeches top administration officials are giving in hopes of curbing criticism over the U.S.-led war in Iraq". See what I am saying? This is a plain and simple tactic of using fear to get a semi-unrelated message across.

I agree that we need to be warned about the threats terrorists pose. I believe that Cheney is probably correct. I do, however, have an issue with when he is using it.

Well less then 5% of shipping containers are ever checked upon entering the ports. There was an alleged shipping container rigged to explode a couple weeks ago in the North West that was discovered and covered up. You can read about it here. Our borders are still wide open. I would not be suprised at what happens in the near future. At least I have my BOB.

As I mentioned "elsewhere" after 9-11-01, I learned about this threat in 1985 while taking FEMA HAZMAT/NBC/Terrorist Protocol courses...and, at the time of the attacks, I said that I'd been waiting for it to come.

Another attack, using different means and targeting hundreds of thousands, IS likely...as I've said MANY, MANY times now, THEY won't stop...and neither should WE.

Get used to living in a wartime situation, ladies and gents...it ain't over 'til it's over, and that means...yes...YEARS.

Garrett...I feel quite confident that's not "why" Cheney said that in his speech. That wasn't him giving that "reason" for saying it in his speech. That was the source who released what Bonnie posted......my guess----------CNN!

Anyway, I believe they're doing everything they can to prevent another attack. They don't want a repeat of 9/11, or something worse, or even something smaller scale. We don't ever hear about most of the threats they get. I feel like when we do, they think it's worth sharing. I am also confident that by warning Americans of a possible attack, specific or non-specific, that may halt the terrorists plans. They don't want to be busted beforehand...then they might not can pull it off. They want shock value and an element of surprise. I'd so much rather be warned and nothing happens then for them to know something and not tell us...then it happens.

Our world as we knew it has changed forever IMO...everyone should live their life of course, but always remain vigilant! I keep one eye on my surroundings at all times while living my life as usual.

I also think it is best for us to be aware of potential attacks. Why not be told that something is a possibilty, if something takes place... then we will say they (the government) didn't warn us.
