Courtney Love appeared in juvenile court on Thursday (October 16), to try and convince a judge that she is fit to care for her child, according to E! Online. Frances Bean Cobain, the 11-year-old daughter of Love and late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was taken from Love and placed in the custody of her paternal grandmother, after Love was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance on October 2. No decision was reached at Thursday's hearing.
Love was seen trying to enter the home of former boyfriend Jim Barber when L.A. police arrested her. A few hours after she posted bail and was released, Love was reportedly hospitalized for an alleged overdose of the painkiller OxyContin.
Love was quoted in the New York Daily News as saying that on October 10, she was admitted against her will to Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, California. Authorities were reportedly concerned that she planned to kill herself, and admitted her under a Californian law--the infamous "5150"--that allows authorities to hold individuals considered to be a danger to themselves or others for a 72-hour period.
Love claims she was joking about suicide, saying, "Yes, I was changing my will that week...I left a message that was like, 'I want to die, I want to jump off the Empire State Building.'" But she said authorities took her seriously.
She spent 24hours at Las Encinas, according to the Daily News, before walking out and reportedly asking people in private residences for help. She claims a man in a guitar store finally drove her home.
Love faces up to a year in jail on the drug charges. Her arraignment is scheduled for October 31.
Her first solo album, America's Sweetheart, was due out on October 28, but has been pushed back to a February 10, 2004, release.
