GOP's Fletcher Wins Kentucky Gov. Race

Rep. Ernie Fletcher easily won the Kentucky governor's race Tuesday, becoming the first Republican to lead the state in 32 years, while the GOP hoped to take another Democratic governor's seat in Mississippi.

With 41 percent of precincts reporting, Fletcher — who got a big campaign assist from President Bush (news - web sites) in the campaign's final days — led with 52 percent, or 246,033 votes, to Democratic Attorney General Ben Chandler's 48 percent, or 224,468 votes.

In both states, candidates tried out slogans and strategies that could well be used in the 2004 presidential race.

President Bush campaigned with GOP candidates in both states. In Kentucky, party activists argued that a vote for Chandler would tell the White House its economic policy is a failure. Mississippi Democrats criticized Republican Haley Barbour as a "Washington insider."

Hmmmm....a Republican governor. This is gonna bug my grandparents. I'm going to have fun when I go to KY for Christmas.

You weren't able to vote? Do they still use the tall machines where you walk in, close the curtain, and pull a slew of levers?

Yep...I had to use the Kids vote station...luckily I have some clout here in Florence to get that changed for us disabled citizens...but it makes me so mad...

After the disgrace and corruption in the Governor's mansion in Kentucky it doesn't surprise me. The big test is Mississippi... still too close to call.

We in MS may just get a Republican Governor and a Republican Lt. Governor at the same time since NEVER. Going to be close. Lt. Governor's race is in the bag with 100% of the precincts reporting. But, only 66% of the precincts are in for Governor. Gonna be a long night.

Congrats Lin..I heard the good news this morning. If history repeats itself, Governer's races preceeding a Presidential Election are a fairly accurate barometer of how the National election will go.

I did not vote for Haley Barbour. I voted for Musgrove who is also Conservative but a Democrat. Back in '85 Barbour helped lobby NAFTA and sent MS jobs to Mexico. Barbour and Musgrove basically agreed on alot of issues facing this state. But I do not trust Barbour. Barbour claims to have ties to Washington. He had ties to Washington when he took our jobs across the border. We shall see if he holds up to all his campaign issues for this state. His election was strictly political for the agenda of Bush. I voted for Bush, but this is my state and the Presidential election is no just cause for him to be elected Governor.
