Capital Murder Suspect in Circuit Court Today.
A man accused of capital murder in the death of Moss Point police officer is scheduled to appear in Circuit Court today. 26 year old Jonathan White of Wiggins is accused of driving a Blazer that struck and killed officer Larry Lee last October.
White is also charged with reckless driving in the officer's death. Authorities say Lee's vehicle was struck on the Mississippi 63 bridge over the Escatawpa River by a vehicle that had fled from another officer during a traffic stop. Authorities say the impact threw Lee more than 200 feet from his car.
Highway Patrol investigators said the Blazer flipped, and White allegedly fled on foot, leaving an injured passenger inside. Police reports indicate that another officer captured White.

This is my courtroom! I have asked to be excused from this today but with no luck. Going to be a long and emotional day for me. The judge told me I need to keep a professional attitude. It is very hard!!

Hang in there Linda! I'm sure that you're not the only one that feels strongly about this in that courtroom where you work. You'll be fine!

Your request for recusal...did you know the officer? Related to him? Or, is this one "personal", due to the heinous nature of the allegations?
Your magistrate's comments puzzle me, Lindaloo...

He was my best friend. I was eventually excused from participation, but not until after lunch. Still had to sit through the first 4 hours. This particular judge is a hard nose and is by the book. IMO, he is a mean, callous man.
The defense is trying to sway the jury into the "scared of the police" theory, which is why he chose to flee from them. But, that will not hold water. The vehicle he was in was stolen, he had no drivers license, and he was out on parole in Alabama. He was not even supposed to be in this state. Second, he was merely pulled over for speeding. If you knew this 63 bridge when you get over the top and on the downhill side of it you best be on those brakes. IMO, his intention all along was to try to ram his way through. He had plenty of time to apply his brakes to avoid a collision. Larry did not even have time to fire his weapon. These guys are not big city cops, they are small town cops. Now I know they are trained for this type of situation, but when you are not used to it it really gets out of hand. I knew Larry well enough to know what he was thinking. THAT is what gets to me the most.
The owner of the blazer said the vehicle was not stolen, but she called it in as stolen. The passenger is supposed to testify today. Can't wait to hear what lies she will tell.
Jara, the DA is pushing for the death penalty.

Excuse my insensitivity. I hate to admit I only half-read the post. Keep your chin up and know we are thinking about you. Take care. {{hug}}

I'm glad that they finally did excuse you. I'm sorry that you did have to go through 4 hours of it though. Like Stormy said, perhaps the judge will end up throwing the book at him being that he is a hard-nose.

Linda, my prayers and thoughts are with you, Wxbuddy! ((((HUG))))
Speaking of the death penalty...NC sure has been lethally injecting death row inmates alot lately. Another one scheduled for this coming Friday morning of a fellow who murdered his aunt down in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) back in the early '90s.
I'm a staunch supporter for the death penalty and it is Biblical.

((Hugs)) Lindaloo That had to be really difficult for ya. I wish some storm2k people could be on that jury. We could put some genuine fear of authority into Mr. White!!!!
