I just heard that the F word has been approved by the FCC for use on any tv show at any time. People are so crude. Are there no morals left? People who use that word all the time have no vocabulary.

Nope, that's not quite true. The FCC has NOT approved the use of the F word. They merely said that Bono did not use the F word as a vulgar or obscene term and therefore he was not guilty of violating obscenity laws. It was a fleeting exclamation and he did not use it in the usual vulgar, obscene context. In other words, he used it as a quick description in an exclamation -- "This is f***ing incredible!" or something like that. He did not use it to express anything about a bodily function or sexual act.

The use of the F word is still banned on network television.

This is from the FCC's document on the matter:

As a threshold matter, the material aired during the “Golden Globe Awards” program does not
describe or depict sexual and excretory activities and organs. The word “f#” may be crude
and offensive, but, in the context presented here, did not describe sexual or excretory organs or
activities. Rather, the performer used the word “f#” as an adjective or expletive to
emphasize an exclamation. Indeed, in similar circumstances, we have found that offensive
language used as an insult rather than as a description of sexual or excretory activity or organs is
not within the scope of the Commission’s prohibition of indecent program content.15
6. Moreover, we have previously found that fleeting and isolated remarks of this
nature do not warrant Commission action.16 Thus, because the complained-of material does not
fall within the scope of the Commission’s indecency prohibition, we reject the claims that this
program content is indecent, and we need not reach the second element of the indecency analysis

Duck... the FCC ruling has allowed the future use of the F- word on T.V. believe it or not.. I am sure its just a matter of time before a t.v. show character utters that word.. Like you said its only allowed being said a certain way.. here is a link to an article about the ruling:):)

It's allowed, in a certain context. But like you said I said , they didn't actually "approve" its use on ANY TV show and ANY time.

Well, I happen to think that the F word should not be used on any channel except the premium ones (like HMO and Showtime).

Duck... see that is what I am wondering ... seems like there is a gray area here that I am sure will be exploited .. this line from the link in my previous message to me leaves open the possible use of the word on T.V...

In fact, the FCC decided to allow the word in question to be uttered on television without sanctions in the future.

I am wondering how much latitude the ruling gives???.. I am sure it won't be long before we find out:):).. Though I doubt we will be hearing Tweety Bird on Saturday Morning Cartoons saying.. I thought I saw a F-ing Puddy cat:):)

I don't care how it is used, as an exclamation or as the act, it's still wrong and inexcusable. Nothing personal to those of you who cuss, but if they can't think of an intelligent word to write in the script, maybe they should get another job!!

If you want to hear that word, pay for it with all the smutty movies they make.

Are you referring only to television writers or motion picture writers as well? Don't you agree, sometimes it adds a bit of dimension to a character? Are you really going to take a killer or villain seriously if he says, "Oh, gosh!" "Golly gee!" and "Darn it!"

I must admit, some writers overuse the word. But is it suitable once or twice in a movie if, and only if, it gives darkness to a character?

Sometimes it slips out. I do not use those words but have been known to let one slip out every now and then. NOT one of us is perfect. If he had intentionally used the word in a derrogatory way THEN I may have a problem with it.

I am talking about Bono's slip of the tongue. Isn't that what this is all about?

I know those NASCAR drivers curse on camera. When they do they are slapped with a great BIG fine by NASCAR!! Those drivers are role models for kids and should be fined.
