People Trapped in Toronto Theater Collapse

Monday, December 08, 2003

TORONTO — A wall of a Toronto theater that was being demolished collapsed Monday into a school next door, trapping people inside and injuring others.

Authorities said it was too soon to tell if anyone was killed in the accident at the Uptown Theater and the Yorkville English Academy, which teaches English mostly to adults and teenagers.

"We have people in the rubble," said Bill Stewart, Toronto's fire chief. Police at the downtown scene said some people had been rescued and taken to hospitals.

"My daughter called me right after it happened and said the roof had collapsed," said Helen Wanger, a parent of a student who was injured.

No other information was immediately available.

The Uptown Theater, which opened in 1920 as a movie theater and a live stage show venue, is considered a historic site and was the subject of an unsuccessful campaign to stop its demolition.

TORONTO — One person was killed Monday when a wall of a Toronto theater that was being demolished collapsed into a school next door.

Authorities said at least 12 people were injured and possibly two more were trapped in the accident at the Uptown Theater and the Yorkville English Academy, which teaches English mostly to adults and teenagers.

"We have people in the rubble," said Bill Stewart, Toronto's fire chief. Police at the downtown scene said some people had been rescued and taken to hospitals.

A search and rescue team is making sure the area is safe to remove rubble, officials said.
