RALEIGH, N.C. (Court TV) — North Carolina State diving coach John Candler resigned last week after an investigation disclosed his 1966 conviction on a sex charge involving a 12-year-old girl.

The university said Candler will remain with the athletic department in an administrative capacity until he retires on March 31.

The investigation into Candler's past began Nov. 19, when a Michigan woman informed university chancellor Marye Anne Fox by e-mail that Candler had pleaded guilty in 1966 to indecent liberties with a 12-year-old girl. Candler served five years probation. The woman apparently knew the victim.

Candler said the university knew about the case when he was hired.

"I would prefer not to resign, but the discomfort that's been caused to my wife, my family, my children and grandchildren, I just don't think it's fair," he said.

In 1985, Candler was charged with taking indecent liberties with a 15-year-old girl in Wake County. He pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence. He served three years of probation and was ordered to undergo therapy.

Candler coached 16 All-Americans, 49 Atlantic Coast Conference champions and one Olympian in his 36 years at N.C. State.

He's just now getting in trouble with the school? :o

They should have never hired him, his punishment was not sufficient, and I don't care if he coached Greg Louganis (IMO, the greatest diver of all time), he should have been in jail.

I agree 150%!!! It kinda shocks me that they would just let that slide!!

Guys- he served his sentance and is no longer dealing with young kids.

We had a similar thread on a literary board I'm on about a murder mystery author who murdered her best friends mom (with her best friends help) when she was 15. She's now into (or past) her 50's- served her time and assumed a new name and identity- and writes murder mysteries. A number of people were shocked and horrified. I dont' see the problem.

The justice system says that once we've served our time- that justice is served. A judge or jury sentnced him to 5 years probation + therepy which he (one would assume) complied with. He's paid his time- and is making a living outside of the world of underaged kids. (If he were hired at a elementary, middle, or high school it would be different)

*shrugs* I feel sorry for the guy. He did something wrong 37 years ago- did his time, got counseling and hasn't repeated the offence since.. and he's being prosecuted for it all over again.

Opera ghost... my problem mainly is that he apparently looks to be a repeat offender. I agree that you CAN change... but 1966 and then 1985? Umm... not a lot of change in my opinion over that 19 years.

Many people murder out of anger, rage, or jealousy. Most people who do kill only kill once.

However, most sexual predators are known recidivists and a large, related problem is that victims don't always tell. Two of his victims came forward about offenses that happened almost 20 years apart. There could very well have been more. I know he served his sentence, but IMO, his sentence wasn't harsh enough and therapy does not cure child molestors.

My bad- I completly missed the 1985 bit- I thought it was just a rehash of the first. Yes that makes a big big difference. (I think it was that both had years of probation?)

Who in their right mind would hire a sex offender to work with teens or young adults? Duck said many sex offenders re offend; I could not agree more.
