The first few paragraphs said enough for me, although I read more of it later tonight when I'm not at work.
The correspondents from the Italian papers are the eyes and ears that "translate" America for Italy. It's basically through your articles that Italians know (or don't) this great nation's virtues and weaknesses. You have an enormous responsibility. What's the hardest thing about your job right now?
RIOTTA - "Until a few years ago it was Italy's pro-american bias. Mentioning anything negative -- the death penalty, the homeless, the dysfunctional public schools in the cities -- was seen as anti-american. Now the opposite trend prevails, Europe doesn't like the U.S. Therefore, people don't want to hear that the labor market is functioning, that maybe the French president doesn't always have the longsightedness of a good strategist, or that Schroeder has transformed Germany from a major force in world events into a less significant nation. For many Europeans the Americans are "cowboys" now, and nobody wants to admit there's also a peace movement here. Unfortunately many of us journalists promoted the the first collective sentiment before, and now promote the second. Writing against the tide is necessary, it's hard but we have to do it."
Quick edit (sheesh, it helps if I finish my thought, eh?):
What I read in the article clearly emphasizes how the media believe they can shape they way people feel about America. If they only want to show one side, since Europe is already very anti-American, then they only serve to solidify that anti-Americanism thinking.
Paolo, the articles you post and the thoughts you relay to us are not "facts" about the war. They are one-sided opinions that are based on emotions and a failure to thoroughly investigate what is going on in Iraq (both before we go there and now).

I don't think it is that simple Ticka. I truly wish it was, but it is't. I don't agree with the way we are portrayed but we have to do a better job with Public Relations. It is as simple as that.

I agree garrett - but the public relations is out of most average american's hands. So what easier way to say - just leave us alone.

Maybe we can give Paolo a free ride with our troops to help out in Afghanistan or Iraq. Wait, if he spews that anti-Amercian personality amongst our troops he may find himself in a shallow grave like they did with our men and women of the greatest militaries on earth.

Woohoo Linda - now there is a solution.

As to that supposed "peace movement" in the U.S., it is a TINY core group of former Communists, Socialists and "Greens", funded by the same people who gave the world the term "GULAG", and supported by old 60's-70's hippies who have come out and taken up positions in American academia and within "activist" legal organs.
Some of the present collegiate undergraduates follow them blindly due to a dearth of proper instruction in history, Constitutional studies and free-market economics at the secondary level, but even these eventually find that they have been "handled", and move on.
This last group of elitists became aware that the PEOPLE of the U.S. wouldn't ever stomach the radical crap they spouted, much less vote it in by legislative process, so they entered our universities and courts to "reshape" our culture and society to suit their agenda. And, by and large, they are failing...thank God!

Or Linda, you could take the chance of a ride with the doctors of Emergency, and see what "gain freedom thanks of bombing" means...

As long as you are there with me. And while we are there, I want you to tell the soldiers what you spew here. The docs are there for that reason, to heal. Ask the soldiers if it was worth it to them. They will tell you Hell yes!! THAT Paolo is what we Americans are about. FREEDOM!!

It's tragic that civilians have died in this war because the cowards who are fighting for Saddam Insane refuse to come out and fight like men. They prefer to hide behind innocents in hospitals and schools, waiting to attack our troops who are seeking to bring freedom and peace from tyranny to those people. A lot of those innocent victims did not die from our weapons, they died in the insurgents' attacks. Many more died over the decade and a half while Saddam was in power. But I won't dispute that our guys have made mistakes and misfires also.
But don't forget, over 3000 innocent civilians lost their lives here, in a matter of just an hour or so. And don't give me that line about how Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. It's not about who bombed the Cole and who flew into the Twin Towers and who resorted to suicide bombing a marketplace in Jerusalem. It's about terrorists --
every last one of them -- who kill for the mentally deranged reason of wanting to "rid the world of infidels." Yes, our troops have racked up a death toll on the other side also. But we have a goal in mind and that goal is to spare Iraqis from the oppressive, torturous control of evil dictators who kill, rape, brainwash, and torture.
Death happens in war. Don't try to tell me that the US is a big bad terrorist. I'm sick of hearing that line out of you and others. We are not terrorizing anyone. We have clearly laid out our goals and are striving to reach every last one of them. If you can't see that, I suggest you open your mind to other news sources.

Galv, if an aircraft would strike the colesseum, I would kill 'em all: talibans, beduins and camels.
But I would never say I'm here because I wanna give you the chance to live in freedom and democracy. I would kill'em all. Period.
So please, You open your eyes to other sources, or just be honest at least with yourself. Freedom of Iraq has nothing to do with this war.

And, Paolo, don't think that we won't eventually deal with the creeps on your "laundry list"; one at a time of OUR choosing, a place of OUR choosing, and in a method of OUR choice.
You can either fight alongside of us, against us, or get out of the way.

If you think that's how we're fighting, you're dead wrong. If that was the case, we'd have nuked 'em on 9/12/2001. But we don't have a "kill 'em all!" attitude.

ah! Finally! I was counting the time to see that latin phrase!
Let me remeber you that Ancient Romans were one of the most warmonger people of the world in that period.
They used to invade and install the Pax Romana.
So let's find an excuse (e.g. you dislike cheesburger), make a preventive war and give freedom to everybody. Am I right?

Oh, come on! Their excuse is that we are infidels...non-believers in their eyes. That's why they KILL. We FIGHT not because of how they believe or if they dislike cheeseburgers

; we FIGHT because we must stop the evil scum.
Why do you not understand that our motives v. their motives?

Bercause it doesn't work Galv, since the time of Crusaders...
Our idea of democracy is not their idea of democracy.
We are not the goods, they are not the evils. The scum is a different thing, that a war cannot cancel or eliminate.
