Louisian Governor Mike Foster has declared a state of emergency due to the heightened terrorism alert.
The move that will provide additional security in the state during the busy holiday season.
The declaration came as the nation guarded itself against a possible terrorist attack that government officials say al-Qaida (al KAY` duh) has signaled could be imminent.
A major factor in the decision to raise the nation`s terror alert was the holiday season, when more people are traveling and large numbers of people gather at events such as college football bowl games.
Louisiana has two bowl games scheduled for the holiday season _ the Independence Bowl on December 31st in Shreveport and the Sugar Bowl on January Fourth. In addition, New Orleans is a popular gathering place for New Year`s Eve celebrations.
Colonel Jay Mayeaux is in charge of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. He says the governor`s declaration provides overtime pay for police officers, and, in some cases, additional security personnel.
The governor`s declaration is effective through January 19th unless the national security alert is downgraded sooner.

While I understand the precautions that are being taken and agree with them, the sad fact is that a small band of trained and dedicated people are almost impossible to stop. Our very own Special Forces are based on this fact. Another attack will happen somewhere at some point in the future.

I agree Marshall, they will get to us again one way or the other.

It's just a matter of time.

I believe the state of emergency was put into place so that National Guard Troops could be mobilized if I am not mistaken.

Not an over-reaction just a means to an end....

I think the Governor did what he felt was right. New Orleans is a big time hot spot on New Year's Eve.

gross over reaction. we cant live our lives in fear. why not call out the national guard to protect against spider bites? i am more afraid of black widow spiders than i am of terrorists. a terrorist attack can occur anywhere at anytime, but considering how rare they are in the states, to have the national guard called out in every state in perpetuity would be a gross over reaction. besides, having the national guard at a few high profile sites will only ensure an attack will occur elsewhere. it is a total impossibility to protect everyone every second of every day. all we can do is be vigilant and lead our lives.

if the guard should be called out anywhere, it should be to close our borders to illegals

Most of the sleeper cells have prob been here for years

Better to declare a SOE thats not needed than one not declared when it is.

Sadly, this will NEVER happen, can you imagine the economic impact this would have? Besides, the hospitals in Tucson, Douglas, Sierra Viesta, Nogales wouldn't have any patients and they would actually be operating in the *black* for once!

I think I read somewhere that New Orleans is the hub of the natural gas and oil lines coming in from the Gulf of Mexico and that an attack there could possibly cripple most of the southeast United States for years.
