A 22-year-old driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in a Saturday night wreck that killed six people and injured three in Benbrook.

Tyrel J. Irwin was treated at an area hospital for head injuries and released Monday morning, Benbrook police Cmdr. U.D. Simonds said.

Simonds said investigators are awaiting toxicology reports, but they believe that alcohol was a factor in the wreck.

"The officer [on the scene] personally smelled alcohol," Simonds said. "He [Irwin] made statements as to the use of alcohol, and we had enough to pursue the investigation of DWI. With the deaths of six people, we will be looking to pursue additional charges."

Another reason I stay home now for New Years Eve, I used to go out but with all the people drinking and the dumb asses that think they can drive home I just rather have a few friends over and keep things in order. just IMO :)

You are not alone in your thinking Christopher. Hopefully the numbers will be down this year on alcohol related fatalities. I would rather see them at 0%... but there are always those ceratin few individuals that think they are invincible and accident free while drinking and driving. Sad, but true.

Be safe

If you are gonna drink tonight..or any other time...dont drive. Drink at home or if u are going to a bar get a cab or another sober ride. Back in the 80's I got in substantial trouble for not following this advice. Luckily I didnt hurt anyone and I also no longer drink. Well have a Happy and Safe New Year!!!
