CLEVELAND (AP) - A woman said through tears Thursday that she lied about losing the winning ticket for a $162 million lottery prize awarded to another woman.
Elecia Battle, 40, is dropping her lawsuit to block payment of the 11-state Mega Millions jackpot to the certified winner, her lawyer Sheldon Starke said.
"I wanted to win," Battle said. "The numbers were so overwhelming. I did buy a ticket and I lost. I wanted to win so bad for my kids and my family. I apologize."
The Cleveland woman had filed a police report saying she lost the ticket, possibly when she dropped her purse outside a convenience store. The lottery declared Rebecca Jemison, 34, the winner on Tuesday.

Battle said she wanted to use the money to help her family and recently laid-off Cleveland police officers. She apologized to Jemison, her lawyer and her husband.
"I'm not a bad person, I'm really not," she said. "Everyone has a past."
Authorities are investigating whether Battle lied in the police report - a misdemeanor punishable by 30 days to six months in jail.
Jemison, of suburban South Euclid, qualified for a lump-sum payment of $67.2 million, after taxes.

I was wondering how long it would take for her to admit the truth. And then we are supposed to feel sympathy for her? I don't think so.

Why punish the attorney? He was lied to as well.
She should be jailed on felony filing a false police report.

Although the attorney should have known that there was no way to prove her case because she was not in possession of a "bearer certificate".
My opinion is that he just wanted to make a quick buck becasue wether she won or lost, he would win his fees. Crooked SOB IMO

Well, at least she admits it, but geez!!!! Some people need to face it and accept that they lost, My mom looks at her lottery tickey, and if 3 or more numbers aren't matching, she crinkles them and uses them for cat toys.

clearly, what this "lawyer" wanted was to extort money from the legitimate winner in order to drop the lawsuit.

How did you come to that conclusion Helen?
Not all attorneys are ambulance chasers. The attorney in this case obviously believed his client. Why else would this liar feel the need to aoplogize to her attorney?

just my opinion. makes sense to me though. i didnt believe that nonsense when i first heard it, and i doubt he did either. lets say he extorted 2 million from the real winner. 33%(or whatever) is a nice payday.

TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, January 8, 2004
A Mt. Pleasant Township couple wants Wal-Mart to pay for foot and toe injuries they claim were caused by canned goods and condiments that tumbled from an overfilled plastic grocery bag.
According to a two-count civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Westmoreland County, Brenda and Ronald Sager contend a plastic bag they brought home from the East Huntingdon Township store last month was deficient and overstuffed.
The bag, which contained a 32-ounce jar of Miracle Whip, a 46-ounce bottle of ketchup, three 15-ounce cans of fruit, an 18-ounce bottle of ranch dressing and a 12-ounce bottle of mustard, broke open when the Sagers returned home and started to put away their groceries.
That's when the handle tore and the bottom of the bag broke, the Sagers claim.
what it doesnt say is that the husband is suing because they enjoy "relations" while she is hurt.
what happened to personal responsibility? if the bag was overfilled, hold it from the bottom!!
