Mo. School Bus Overturns; 26 Kids Injured
By JIM SALTER, Associated Press Writer

ST. LOUIS - A school bus taking city children to a suburban school as part of a desegregation program overturned Monday, injuring 26 students and the driver. The driver and one of the students were seriously injured, authorities said.

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 64 about 10 miles west of the St. Louis city limit.

It wasn't clear how the accident happened. A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman said the westbound bus flipped onto its side after the driver apparently tried to stop because of traffic in front of her. The roadway was dry at the time.

"It was chaotic," Highway Patrol Cpl. Jeff Meyer told KSDK-TV. "There were kids on the bus, kids off the bus. There were a lot of people who stopped on the highway to help out."

The identities of the injured were not released.

The bus was carrying St. Louis students to Shenandoah Valley Elementary School in Chesterfield as part of the region's voluntary desegregation program, Parkway School District spokeswoman Suzanne Miller said.

Hospitals reported treating or expecting to treat 29 to 31 students, many with minor injuries.

Laidlaw Transit Inc. of Naperville, Ill., operates the bus. Spokesman Jeff Kintzle said the driver has been with the company for about 11 months.

Traffic was backed up for several miles as all westbound lanes were shut down, though traffic was passing along a shoulder.

The latest I have heard are that 2 are seriously injured. The driving wasn't paying attention.
