Ready for a trip to the moon???

#1 Postby bfez1 » Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:10 pm

Bush sets course for 2015 moon landing -
President Bush proposes to develop a new spacecraft to carry Americans back to the moon by 2015, and to establish a long-term base there as an eventual springboard to Mars and beyond.

Now that I think about it...and as the hourly news updates on the radio continue to refresh my thoughts, this is really getting exciting to think about.

I was born before we set foot on the moon for the first time, but I was just over a year old when the "Eagle" landed. So, I don't really remember all the to-do's going on about it. It wasn't long before shuttle missions almost seemed routine to most people watching the news. However, after what our space program has been through over the past decade and a half (mishaps and lost rovers, as well as the horrible tragedies with loss of life), I'm glad to see more emphasis being placed on our mission to propel us beyond fictitious motion picture visions of what's out there and when we can reach it.

Go George!

Well, let's see. We have kids who go to bed at night hungry. We have people throughout the country who don't have the money or resources to purchase the much needed fuel to keep their houses warm this time of year. We have people who can't read or do simple arithmetic. We have others who have the potential to be next Albert Einstein working minimum paying jobs after high school because they can't afford to go to college. On top of that, we have a lunatic on the loose who has threatened our lives (bin Laden), illegals who are going to get all rights a US citizens, the possibility of no social security benefits when I retire, and then my paycheck is taxed to the max.

But let's make sure we spend billions and billions of dollars to put someone on the moon. It's election year - anything to get our minds off what he hasn't been able to accomplish.

Well, according to the press conference, it will only take an additional billion dollars over the next 5 years. The rest of the money ($11 billion) will be acquired through rearranging funds already allocated to NASA. (Of course, these amounts could increase, and I think they will.) In principle I agree with you janswizard, but don't be overdramatic.

I remember watching the broadcasts of the flights to the moon when I was really little. It would be nice to see what else we could accomplish there with all of the new technology.

However, I thought the same thing as you did janswizard....

Consider this: If Christopher Columbus had waited until all the internal problems in Europe had been settled before setting out for the New World, we may not even be here. But the discovery of the New World did more to revitalize the economies of European nations than anything else they did.

There are so many untold treasures and benefits from space exploration that are just out there waiting for us. I for one applaud the decision.

I'm on the fence- it's interesting and intriguing; yet there are so many things that money could be better spent on!

How in the world does telling us that we have a military base with top secret weapons testing facilities in Nevada save us millions of dollars and what does it have to do with exploring space?
