GARLAND, Texas (KXAS NBC5) -- A woman who claimed she was carjacked, shot and stuffed into the trunk of her car has admitted she made up the whole story.
Because of her false report, there's a chance Marilyn Van Zant will face criminal charges for her actions.
In Hutchins Tuesday, police began an investigation based on a 911 call that came from a Rowlett woman claiming she'd been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of her car.
"The end result is she recanted her statement," said Joe Harn, of Garland police. "In fact, she was not kidnapped. The gunshot wound to her hand was self-inflicted."
Police said Van Zant claimed she was at the Garland DART station to catch a train, when she was carjacked. She said her attacker stopped at Dowdy Ferry Road, shot her and forced her into the trunk, but the evidence didn't add up. The trajectory of the bullet that wounded her hand did not match the trajectory of a bullet that would have been fired by someone else.
Harn said Van Zant admitted using her husband's gun to shoot herself.
Her motive for making up the story is unknown.
