I believe I have posted on it in here at some point. It haas been rumored that the total number is about 300 and not 15. I think the 15 would cover the largest size such as tanker and cargo ships. They fly flags of other nations and switch often. Now could they sail into our ports or would they try? My guess is that's a very good chance right now. We have a huge hole in our security at the ports and border. Only 5% of shipping containers are ever checked so even without a navy they can get stuff in.

I highly doubt they have 300 ships  Maybe 15 but even then I doubt they are much of a threat

Reports resurfaced last week of Al Qaeda’s "15 Mystery Ship Navy". Current intelligence suggests that it may very well be a fleet of approximately 300 vessels, ranging in size from commercial fishing boats to vessels large enough to carry chemical agents such as those used in ‘Dirty Bombs’. (New York Post; 1 January 2003)

I certainly am not "in the know", but it sure feels like we are chasing a lot of shadows.

Also sounds that the US will have to deploy a submarine squadron and carriers to hunt down those alleged Al-Qaeda ships but I dont believe that they have too many (300) maybe 15 or less.

Does anyone remember the CSS Alabama or the German WW II "Q" ships?

They were fitted out to look like merchantmen, but were actually possessed of heavy guns for high-seas raiding...armed like a light cruiser (for reference).

It is entirely possible that Al Qaida has at least some of such ships. Add that at least one may already be fitted with missiles in its hold (thereby eluding aerial detection), to be fired at land-based targets from well outside international waters limits?

The possibilities are endless, and well within the scope of Al Qaida's planning and acquisition.

Bill anything is possible and I hope that the US is aware about this possible threat.
