Disturbing college news in MO...

I just received an E-mail from the MO Region Phi Theta Kappa President, containing ugly news; it seems that Lincoln University, who has had a "working relationship" with State Fair Community College in Sedalia, is now trying to take over the community college as a "satellite" in a hostile manner.

Lincoln is demanding power to dictate State Fair's curriculum, has sent "visiting profesors" who it now wants to be placed as "permanent", etc.

It is feared that this may be a "test case" for larger colleges and universities to follow in future across the state....in essence, a hostile takeover of independent community colleges en masse in Missouri, and possibly elsewhere. For instance, Three Rivers CC in Poplar Bluff has a voluntary agreement to match its studies with SEMO for transfers; Debi was a beneficiary of this to smooth her transition. If Lincoln is permitted to proceed, SEMO could do the same to Three Rivers, UMSL to St. Louis Community College District, etc.

And so much for community colleges. :(

Some of us here are beneficiaries of junior/community colleges, either as technical schools or as springboards to four-year universities as transfer students (as I was). What think ye?

Alot of community colleges offer curriculum that would be "accepted" by the local state colleges and universities. They are generally stepping stones for those to move onto a 4 year college. I agree that they need to offer courses that are in line with nearby 4 year schools, but they still should have their own "identity". Never mind the fact that it is alot cheaper for people to go to a community college than a state college or university. Now it seems that Lincoln University will probably end up raising the tuition as well if it goes through. That's ashame to hear Bill. :(

Steph,

Many people go to community colleges for technical jobs or one-year "certificates", not intending to transfer at all. FI, most MO CCs have a "Criminal Justice" courseload which is a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree for police officer candidates.

Other course loads are geared for Computer Repair, Systems Management, Culinary Science (restaurant chefs), etc. who won't need advanced degrees.

This "hostile takeover" by Lincoln University is unconscionable, and in the E-mail I recieved a link to a petition site to protest...and I did. :grrr:

Garrett,

I just E-mailed one of MO PTK's most effective luminaries for the link (I deleted the original E-mail, sorry :( ), and hope to be able to post it sometime this evening.

Curious; are you PTK too?

Bill

Well, dang! :( Anyway, I'm also looking into the possibility of taking this nationwide, lest other four-year schools try it. Not only through Phi Theta Kappa's network, but also through several "heavyweight" PTK alums I know who are now Presidents of their community college districts....one in Iowa, another in Massachusetts.

I was very active in PTK on the local chapter, state and regional levels over the years...25 years as of last December.
