I have trouble with ants in my yard also. To kill the mound you need to use a liquid ant poison. A few years ago I also used my fertilizer spreader to spread the granule ant poison. It worked. No ants in my yard but my neighbors did.

I stood right in the middle of a nest today. My feet are covered in painful bites.
Me to JQ I have never seen ants like this before in my life. I have tried all sorts of powders, sprays, and fire ant killers.... they just keep coming back.
HELP Chad PLEASE give me the name of that stuff.

Like CajunMama said make sure you use a liquid killer - I use granules and have to do it every other week - I have an acre of land - so I spend a fortunate on fire ant killer. Chad - can you please post what you use?
THANKS.

Here you go... Its the third bag down on the left... That is the actuall picture of the bag.. So look for just that.
You apply 1/2 cup over 2ft arear around each fire ant mound ( i poor the majority of it right on the mound) Immediately after application , water in thouroughly, but apply it gently to avoid disturbing the ants. If you use high persser watering ewuipment you will do nothing more but disturb them and cause them to migrate before this works reducing the effectiveness. (i apply 1 gallon of water to each mound)
Package says it works best when is apliead in cooler times of the day, like the early morning when tempatures are between 65-80 degrees..
This stuff works with in 24 hours... you will be amazed... Ive never used any of there other products but i sure will for now on... This is the ONLY fire ant product that i have found that actually works, and i have tried tons.
Hope this info helps you all out... I cant stand ants... expecially now that i will have a lil one running around out side soon..
The bag does say that it is toxic to birds and fish... I let the granuals sit for 2 days then i use the highpressure water and water them into the soil

Someone ought to be doing some research to see if those critters have any natural enemies. how about a pet anteater?

Liquid Diazanon (sp) kills the mound & the queen. Ortho is one of the manufacturers.

Thanks guys! I am off to the garden dept at Wal mart tomorrow.....
I think maybe coriolis an Aardvark would do nicely to eradicate the problem (they eat tons of ants every night, just wont have a garden left either.lol)

Amdro (spelling?) also works pretty decent as well.
My next door neighbors' son uses fireworks, fire, and anything pyrotechnic to kill fireants.
(I originally posted this in Storm2k games)
When I was about 5 years old, My father took his car in to the car repair shop off of Montague Ave. in North Charleston. I was barefoot and I saw like thousands of fireants crawling around on the sidewalk. I wandered over there to look at them when the next thing I know, I was covered in them, and they bit the crap out of me. I ended up with a ton of fireant bites and a trip to the hospital.
So to say I have no love loss for fireants is a definite understatement.
They are their own natural enemy!

Capture an ant from another colony and put it in the colony you want to get rid of. Just 1 ant will work. For some reason, this really upsets the apple cart so to say. The next day that nest will be gone.
It works!

I like the gasoline idea. I have another type of ant that is very persistant. they are part black and red about half inch long and build huge mounds if left alone.

Amanzi, did you get rid of those fire ants?
i talked to an exterminatorthe other day. he told me of two products that work great on ants(any type). on is called ADVANCE ANT BAIT I bought that from Guardian Pest Control, trying it now. Another one is new it is made to fight termites but it'll destroy a whole ant colony pretty quick I was told, It is called TERMADORE. You may only be able to get it over the internet, not sure yet. I'm trying the other one first.
