WOODLAWN, Maryland (AP) -- A brawl broke out during an anger management assembly at a suburban high school.

Two people were arrested and 11 students were suspended after a shoving match escalated into a melee during Thursday's assembly.

Authorities said a confrontation between a student's mother and a group of girls who had been bothering her daughter turned into a shouting match, and led to pushing and hitting, before the crowd of 750 students erupted into "chaos," said C. Anthony Thompson, principal of Woodlawn High School.

The melee began as students on stage acted out peaceful ways to resolve conflict during the assembly was organized by Sheppard Pratt Health System.

"People were climbing over seats and started fighting about stupid stuff," said ninth-grader Melissa Parks.

"Unfortunately, that original incident at the assembly became the catalyst for other fights," said Douglas J. Neilson, a spokesman for Baltimore County schools.

It took about 15 minutes to defuse the situation, Thompson said.

The mother, who was not identified because she had not been brought before a commissioner, was to be charged with trespassing and disrupting school activities, said Officer Shawn Vinson, a spokesman for the police department.

The daughter, who was not identified because she is a minor, was to be charged with second-degree assault, he said.

Thompson said some of the suspended students might be recommended for expulsion.

Wow the situation sure got out of control. But other than that, I'm glad the mother stood up for her daughter. My mom helped me out once when a group of kids were messing with me. It didn't evolve into a riot though, heavens no, but my mom scared those girls and they never messed with me again. Also, when my little brother was in 1st or 2nd grade, on the walk home from school these kids in 4th/5th grade kept picking on him. The school wouldn't do anything about it because it happened off school grounds. I was in 7th grade at the time, so I stood outside one day and waited for it to happen in front me. Sure enough I saw some kid push my brother. I ran at him and let him know a thing or two. I didn't touch the little bully (oh I wanted to!), but I broke him to tears. Those kids never messed with my brother again. Sometimes you have to use a little intimidation. I have no problem standing up for myself now and neither does my brother. I feel bad that the girl and mother in this article are being charged, but given that they essentially started a riot, I guess the charges are warranted.
