Today we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense.
Common Sense lived a long life but died in the United States from heart failure.
No one really knows how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, and factories helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.
For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second.
A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including body piercing, whole language, and "new math."
But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus.
In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero-tolerance policies.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parent when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion.
Eventually, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports. Finally, when a woman, too stupid to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, was awarded a huge settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel.
As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable regulations such as those for low flow toilets, rocking chairs, and stepladders.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and, finally, his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers: My Rights, and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his or any of his family's funerals because so few realized they were gone.

My apologies for it's crudeness...I tried to indent, but to no avail... :x

ADMIN NOTE: I deleted the mess in this thread.

Coppertop, well said! :-) It's refreshing to see a sign of hope like yourself in today's youth! Keep up the good work. We're all proud of you! ;-)

I would like an explanation of what exactly the issue was. Thanks.

Just more of an escalation of what we were seeing during the day yesterday, Widreman. The discussion quickly turned away from Coppertop's post.

Ah, I understand... Coppertop's sarcastic anti-liberal post is fine and dandy but Widremann's somewhat anti-conservative response is grounds for post deletion. Thanks for clearing that up! :D

All sarcasm aside, I think if the intent was truly to stop the "escalation of what we were seeing yesterday," this entire thread (particularly the original post) would have been deleted rather than just one response.

You are welcome to take issue with his conclusions as long as you abide by the rules of the board. Again we do not censor the ideas just the manner in which they are presented. Widremann's response was a direct jab at the poster not the post itself.

No it wasn't! The only reason you deleted it was because I went straight to the heart of a certain part of conservative ideology. And some people here, who can't handle being wrong apparently, decided to take it as a personal attack in order to pooh-pooh it away.

Yes it was. I don't care how you want to couch it as scarasm, you directly addressed Coppertop as the "cause". You are welcome to give a differing opinion but you will do in accordance with the rules of the board or you will not post here. I can't make it any clearer. On this issue there is no debate.

Please post my response again so all can judge whether it was a personal attack. Attacking ideology or actions is not a personal attack. After all, I've been called a communist by members here and other things and I don't considerate a personal attack (though it is not, in fact, true that I am a communist). And even if it was, I'm not wearing my heart on my sleeve such that I go and cry in my room for hours because somebody called me a name on an internet forum during a political debate. Don't you think it's a bit ridiculous to have such a tight fist over such a minor issue?

The issue is where you draw the line. We've drawn the line and it's pretty clear. You crossed it and we deleted the post. Again, this board is not a democracy. Deal with it...

Again, I find the moderators' excuses for this selective deletion to be terrible. Stephanie specifically said this was the reason for deleting Widre's post: Just more of an escalation of what we were seeing during the day yesterday. If this was the reason, the entire thread would have been deleted because Coppertop's tongue-in-cheek attack on liberalism was every bit as inflammatory as Widre's response! The only difference is that it was in line with the majority's opinion here.

I didn't cross the line. You guys are just mad because someone crossed your ideology. That's a fact. You get over it. There are, believe it or not, other valid opinions in the world besides neo-conservativism.

as I see it...coppertops post was not directed at an individual...your's Mr Widremann WAS!

Again...there doesn't have to be a problem....ya'll can go post somewhere else that you actually enjoy. There are plenty of members of this board that enjoy it here. "You" obviously don't!

For the last time, my post was not directed at an individual in a personal attack.

I'm waiting for someone to put my post up so that this can be judged properly. I certainly didn't make a personal attack, and if anyone construed it as such, it wasn't my intent.

Where did you see the word liberal in his post? I just saw the word "common sense."

Thus the phrase "tongue-in-cheek" ...
