the loons have returned!

There is just a long enough landing strip in the lake for them between the ice and the land for them to crash down. They have been chorusing back and forth every 15 mins or so. I can't wait for tonight when the traffic dies down so I can hear them better.

You'd best be takin some pictures.

Speaking of loons...they remind me of that movie "On Golden Pond".

Golden Pond = Squam Lake = only about 10-12 miles from me.

I love loons. No offense.
I love wolves even more, tho.
I hope there are some up here...officially there are not...but many people disagree, and for more reasons there heresay...ie, Bodies found, prints and the fact that once in the woods there are absolutely no coyotes...thus implying the presence of a larger predator.

Maybe they will eat all the growth off that bench of yours

Loons are a favorite of mine also. I saw a pair just the other day in our Lake Adrian....I'm sure they're on the way to the U.P. Nothin' beats that mournful song of theirs. I've visited a wonderful wildlife preserve in the U.P. called Seeney that has hundreds of Loons.....Trumpeter Swans, Eagles, lots of other good stuff too. It's always interesting to see them dive and come up nowhere near the same area!......p

Will......... about your wolf theory.......I think you may have something! The absence of the coyote ( a scavenger ) does seem to make sense! Though coyotes were not in my area when I was growing up, we've got plenty now. Same with the whitetail deer.....very few ever seen 50 years ago; huge population now. Coyotes are their only predator.

Somethin' interesting! A wolverine was spotted in the thumb area a few months back! It was the FIRST EVER recorded sighting here in Michigan......even tho it is our official mascot! Now, just so those durned coyotes stay away from those loon nesting areas!......p

That is one of my favorite movies. It reminds me so much of my Great Uncle's house in Ludlow, Vermont which I had the pleasure of visiting in 1976. It was located on a lake, which for some reason I thought was called "Silent Lake", but looking at maps, it was probably "Lake Rescue". It had a boat cabin facing it the lake. Their house was filled with antiques and it was just lovely! I don't believe it is in the family anymore but I wish it was. I'll never forget it!

And that movie really fails to do them justice. Loons have other calls beside the Tremolo, which always seems to get the most publicity.

Understood, Winnipesaukee! But, they don't
migrate this far south for me to know their
lovely song!

I have a friend in Illinois who has a whole room decorated in loon "stuff" and she'll play those loon CD's if you want some real "music."
