My 9:13 pm EDT post:
ColdFront77 wrote:I have been told that people have different styles of getting their point across. If people use the same words to make sentences, what is so unique?
I have brought this up before, but never in it's own thread.
There are only so many different ways to construct sentences. Words make sentence, which in turn make paragraphs.
I can honestly say I understand "posting (writing) style," however six members here can and do post the same thing, so that obviously isn't a "posting (writing) style."

I think this needs clarification...I've read it through 4 times and still have no idea what you're saying. Sorry.

Tom, this sounds promising, but I can't quite get a grip on what you're asking. Could you expound on that a little? Is it one big paragraph vs. several small ones? Tone? I'm not an english major, so you have to spoon-feed me this stuff.

I lost you on that last sentence, Tom.

Ugh!
Oh well. This happens to me from time to time and it can be very annoying.
I have been told that people have different styles of getting their point across. If people use the same words to make sentences, what is so unique?

Maybe it's the way they arrange the words?

That's my point. Words can only be arranged so many ways.

Maybe it's their tone of voice? LOL. To be honest with you, I don't know the answer to your question.

Those that have discussed this before (in the chatroom) will have an explanation.

Not really sure how to answer without seeing an example Tom.

hmmm... i wonder what my style is? I guess mine is more of a speaking style of posting. I am not extremely formal about it nor do i preach. But i'm not a rude type of informal. Is that what you're talking about tom??

I thought of that, too. It has to just happen.
I agree with different styles to a point, but I have been told that my posts are "robotic." Which is impossible if I use the same words as everyone else to create a topic, make a response and/or express an opinion.

I think first of all that you underestimate the ways a certain thing can be said.
It also has to do with the content of the thoughts presented, the metaphors or examples provided and the timing used in displaying them.

Metaphors are one thing, the timing means nothing... in reference to how much time elapses before making a response, etc.

Interesting topic, Tom. No matter how much we try to be unique in our style of writing, there really are only so many ways to formulate grammatically correct sentences. This is one reason why English and writing has never interested me much; it's so subjective and hard to define what's good and bad. I cannot stand it when English teachers grade your writing based on style because there is no set "correct" style, and one teacher may love a style another fails students for using.

And if you're Yoda, you can arrange them anyway you want.

Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.

I suppose I mean that to a degree and at the same time not sure, JQ. I just don't see why it was brought up in a sort of negative way. That is to say the way we express ourselves are more subtle than I have believed them to be when this issue comes up.
